Aviv - "Black Coffee"

A tall mug of AVIV’s “Black Coffee”

At just 15 years of age, Toronto singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist AVIV is already full of promise and talent beyond her years. The folks at Photo Finish Records rightfully noticed and signed this veritable wunderkind on to help her grow as a musician and hopefully, turn into the star she surely deserves to be.

“Black Coffee” (Ft. OCTAVIO The Dweeb) has an insane amount of value to offer for both the casual and the attentive listener. For those of us who hadn’t heard anything by AVIV before, I think it works as an incredible first taste of who she is as an artist, as you really can’t ask anything more of a (hit) single. AVIV’s vocals are full of the candid vulnerability we’ve come to expect out of great Bedroom-pop, but the pictures she paints and allegories she spins with her lyrics have a wonderful layer of folkish singer-songwriter patina. Aviv is quick to pull you into her catchy sing-along ride so effortlessly you’d think you heard the song a million times before, and considering how well her video is doing on Youtube, I’m sure quite a few of you are getting to that point.

Though no direct references are made to it in the song itself (and refreshingly so) perhaps “Black Coffee” wouldn’t exist without the current debacle around us: “With COVID, a lot of my friendships and my friends’ romantic relationships just came to a full stop,” Says AVID, adding further; “People drifted. When you pour out your cup of black coffee, there are all of these grains in the bottom that stay there. Those grains are all of the things that could’ve been pursued, but the cup was already poured out….” That level of inspired observation turned to wordplay is what feels really amazing coming from someone so young and fills you with a desire to keep looking out for their next step.

Obviously, “Black Coffee” isn’t some transcendental or groundbreaking piece of work, but neither is it a shallow throwaway catchy bop, instead, it’s a very well-structured and beautifully crafted song that shows a tangible vision and a refined musical intuition. It’s plain to see that AVIV has a natural ability to produce sincere, engaging music beyond the repetition of a strong chorus. if she continues to apply that same songwriting prowess to her work in the future, there’s no limit to what she can accomplish.

As great a song as this is, I got a feeling like she’s going to overshadow it with something even better sooner rather than late. So don’t sleep on it!
