Last week we were invited to the premier of Astari Nite’s new video for the song “The Boy Who Tried” off their Anonymous EP. Both the song and the video transmit sorrow and nostalgia combined with a beautiful new wave atmosphere.
After the premier we had a chance to talk to Mychael Ghost, lead singer of the band, about the process of recording the video and their upcoming projects.
The video for “The Boy who Tried” combines innocence and darkness. Those two factors seem to be a constant, not only in your music but also in your aesthetic. Is that intentional? The beauty of being in a band with my mates is the simple fact that they allow me to be who I am. How I portray myself on stage or video tends to be the same way I am when the five of us are together or when I’m also at my home with my loved ones.
How was the process of making this short film? How many people were involved and how did you guys decide the plot and structure?
Illia (drums) and I both had a concept in mind that we thought would come across rather well in cinema. Shortly after him and I discussed our ideas, we brought in Photohause productions (Jaime Lopez) to bring it all to life. Jaime also had some input that was very essential in capturing the dynamics of it all. He made me feel comfortable and that is what’s most important to me when creating with someone.
“The Boy Who Tried” is part of your Anonymous EP, released earlier this year. Can you share with us the story behind the song?
To be quite honest the song is about mourning the death of a loved one. Sometimes in life innocence is taken from us without any regard whatsoever. I had the chance to write about it and of course act it out in video.
Astari Nite had the honor of playing with iconic musicians such as Peter Murphy, The Psychedelic Furs, Modern English…. Who is missing in that list? With what band or singer you would love to play in the future?
Yes we have had the privilege of playing with many iconic musicians whom we admire dearly. I think some bands that come to mind that I would enjoy playing or touring with would be Placebo, Clan of Xymox, MXMS and The Birthday Massacre.
Are you planning on releasing new music soon?
On Christmas day of this year, Astari Nite will release our first single titled “Always like Yesterday” which is a bit of a preview as to what you can expect on our 2016 album. I think our fans will find that it’s nothing like we have ever released before. I found myself smiling and laughing during the writing process of this album, does that mean our style has changed a bit- perhaps.
