Rarely you find a beautiful face to go with an equally beautiful voice; but such
is the case with Charlotte Cardin. This 20-year-old female model (Elite Agency in Paris)
turned full time musician just recently signed with Montreal-based indie label, Cult
Nation. Her single “Big Boy” newly debuted on July 2nd to reasonable reviews. This
female crooner delivers a range in pitches to soothe the listener’s ears. Her use of falsetto
is almost undecipherable and indistinguishable from her chest voice.
“Big Boy” opens with a light touch on the piano as Cardin’s voice sets sail on the melody. The appearing and disappearing of the jazz percussion work brilliantly with Cardin’s voice, as not to take too much attention from her talents. Lyrically, “Big Boy” is strong. She recognizes her youth and plays on the words “my boy is not a man yet” to signify the theme’s adolescence.
Though her voice on “Big Boy” gives an air of innovation, one cannot help but be reminded that other female singers have paved the way for Cardin. There is nothing Cardin has invented in this vocal style that other female singers, such as Nora Jones, have done previously. Nonetheless, the track is very well constructed and is a pleasant listen.
