David Bowie released yesterday a 10 minute video for the song “Blackstar,” the title track of his upcoming album. Last October Bowie announced that “★” will be out on January 8th, the day of his birthday, and that it was recorded in New York with local jazz musicians.
The new video, directed by Breaking Bad’s Johan Renck, is a fantastic story that takes place in a mysterious and isolated land during a solar eclipse. A dead astronaut with her skull covered in jewels, a woman with a tail, scarecrows, convulsive dancing children and creepy creatures bring this tale to life.
The song is an evidence of Bowie’s unquestionable talent and ability to adapt his sound to nowadays standards without losing his unique style. The track experiences many rhythm and vocal changes creating happier and darker atmospheres that are perfectly represented with the situations that occur in the video.
