Armed with MIDI controllers and synths, Digital Rebels live act is filled with old school re-edits, live remixes, as well as their own productions. During the last months the have been playing at some of Miami’s most important underground venues such as Electric Pickle and Do Not Sit on the furniture.
TML magazine interviewed Digital Rebels before their show at Death’s Door party tonight at The Garret. Get to know more about this electric duo!
You have been DJing for a long time. First in your hometown, Venezuela, and later in Miami. Why did you decide to start with Digital Rebels project?
Kid – Well everything began the day that Electric Pickle invited me to play one night, I asked Mitchell Cokewell, the Pickle’s GM and excellent buddy of mine, if I could bring a friend to play with me that night, he said yes so I invited Savy Fontana. Savy had some midi controllers lying around his studio and he programed them so we would be able to jam B2B, adding effects and being able to match his Tracktor to mine. That night turned out to be one of our most epic sets we have done till this date, people went crazy, it was surreal. After the show everyone kept asking us what our name was, like if we were a band or something. That night we decided to form Digital Rebels and it has been a very cool journey so far.
DJing is many times considered as an individual practice. What’s the secret behind Digital Rebels? Do you have different rolls?
Savy –There isn’t really a secret or a formula. The way we play is very organic; we both have different styles and music tastes. Kid likes more dark beats and heavy baselines while I am more into sexy, funky sounds and cool vocals. I think I bring a different element to the band since I sing and play live synth during our shows, it’s all improvised in the moment but we are currently working on original material. We really just feed of each others energy and have a great time, maybe way to much fun sometimes haha. We want people to experience the love we have for music and God and just go all out every time we play.
How would you describe Digital Rebels’ sound with 3 words?
DEEP, SEXY, FUNKY
What has been the biggest challenge that you guys had to face so far?
Savy – I think the biggest challenge for us has been breaking into the underground scene here in Miami. There is a lot of competition but most of all it’s about who you know, that will get you the gigs. Because we were new in Miami we didn’t really know that many people in the scene, but thanks to a few friends and fans that have put in a good word for us, we got a couple of opportunities to play and be heard. That has opened many doors for us. The journey is long but we have started to walk down the right path.
Ultra is around the corner. Despite all the international acts that come into town on that busy week, what do you think about Miami’s electronic local scene?
Kid – We have been in Miami for several years now and have seen how the music scene has grown and is still growing fast. There is a lot of fantastic local talent that is growing and starting to get recognition in the underground scene. A lot of venues, promoters and fans are supporting that local talent which is helping the scene to grow more and more. We think that in the following years Miami will be the new mecca for Dance Music!
Tonight you are going to be DJing at Death’s Door party. What can the crowd expect from Digital Rebels’ set?
Savy – We have a killer set prepared along with some new surprises! Expect to dance, jump and have a good time! We are blessed to play with our friends Dj Romina and Ella Romand who are going to set the tone for that. We also want to thank King’s Head Records for inviting us to play.
Not Sit on the Furniture.
