Exclusive Interview with Denny Bowen

Exclusive Interview with Denny Bowen

When did you first know you wanted to become a musical artist? What was the first song you ever wrote?

It’s all I’ve ever wanted to be.  As far back as early elementary school.  Don’t remember the first song.  But I do want to forget most of the early stuff!

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

My influences have changed drastically over the years.  In the early years, I had artists that I wanted to be like.  In later years, I am attracted to artists that are doing things like I am.  My top five now are Butch Walker, Roger Clyne, Rhiannon Giddens, Billy Strings, The Civil Wars.   Oh, and I really love Gangstagrass!

What’s in your IPOD this week?

Don’t have an iPod!  I love to watch artists on YouTube!  I listen to everyone.   I love to discover new artists.

How’s the music scene in your locale?

I think it’s kind of eclectic.  Lots of small clubs.  Many different genres.  There was a time that San Antonio was the Metal Capital of the world!  A local band could play on a Monday night for over 500 people.  Those days are long gone.

What do you like most about playing live?

When you are playing where people came specifically to see you play, there is nothing like it!  I remember a festival we played years ago, and the crowd rushed the stage, tore down the barrier, and pulled the bass player off the stage!  At that moment, I couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to do anything else!   Of course my music these days doesn’t lend itself to that…haha

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

All of my songs are very personal to me.  They each represent something different.  Whether it’s a personal experience, or a personal prayer.  Some, like my latest single, are a lot of fun to play.  I love to play in open tunings, so when I play live, people ask me if I’m using backing tracks!  Nope!

What’s the best concert you’ve been to?

So many amazing experiences!  One that stands out, I saw Jr Brown in a small club.  I stood right in front of the stage, 5 feet from him.  One of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen!

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

Roger Clyne would be a great person to have the opportunity to hangout with.  He does things the way I want to do them.  He is grass roots.  His fans know the words to every song and sing along to em every song!

What are your goals for the future?

I want to keep releasing songs!  I have close to 100 originals, and they all mean something to me.  I have a message. I want to be known for that message.  I want to be able to travel anywhere and have people show up!  I want to be able to take my wife and kids on the road with me
