Miami based musician Kris Alvarez is back with a new project called Firstworld, and today we have the pleasure of premiering his newest track and video “Easy Access.”
Many local folks should already be familiar with Kris’ name since he has been very active in the local scene playing with his his previous band Sigh Kicks and collaborating with Millionyoung. This time Alvares decided to dive deep into chillwave and synth sounds and created Firstworld.
“Easy Access” features minimal keys and soft vocals that all together generate a nostalgic and calm atmosphere with a vintage aftertaste. According to the musician, the concept behind the video was to re-create the most pretentious 80s/90s styled video possible from memory, to reduce it to its fundamental elements and take it to nostalgic extremes achieving a satirized pastiche.
While many avoid labeling themselves, Alvarez embraces the term chillwave in both sound and look,
albeit with an updated totally lo-fi aesthetic, choosing instead to focus more on the genre’s early fuzzy roots reminiscent of Life of Leisure era Washed Out with a hint of Neon Indian’s 2009 epic Psychic Chasms. What initially began as an outlet to write darker, more lo-fi songs, has transformed into
a full-fledged project currently boasting two other members, Daniella Chamorro (formerly of Millionyoung) and Joey Prats (Salas), with Alvarez as the principal composer.
Firstworld will perform a rare DJ set at 1306 (Miami) on August 31st to celebrate the release of his new single, and then he will go on a three-date mini-tour from Sarasota through Gainesville, September 7-9.
