Jean Jacket, is one of the newest and more original bands from Miami. Their surreal and complex electronic melodies generated a big impact on the local scene and they are getting ready to hit the national electro-indie dance floors with the release of their upcoming self-titled debut LP.

Initially a solo project, the group features a changing lineup of performers alongside frontman Harlowe Gee, including the State Of’s Stephanie Taylor, Lauren Suarez, and fellow Miami act Million Young.

Before their show at Death’s Door party at The Garret, we had the chance to ask Harlowe some questions about his music and hypnotic live act.

You have been making music for many years now. Why did you decide to create Jean Jacket?
I’d been involved with a myriad of projects that never really did it for me. Jean Jacket is the result of finally doing, as well as having, a project that is all my own and can manipulate any which way I want. It was a direction I was heading in naturally, but I did want to create something more honest and intimate than what I had previously done. It was kind of a rough time in my life, and I felt being as real and vulnerable as I could with myself would be the best therapy. I was also being inspired by so much art around me at the time, that I wanted to reflect that as well in my music.

Surreal, complex melodies and dreamy vocals. What is Jean Jacket’s main motivation when composing your songs?
There is no main motivation for me per se when it comes to composing. The Jacket is a result of sudden or over-time emotions to all of my senses. This album specifically had to do with not only my environment, but my situation at the time. So essentially, composing songs really is a result of what ever it is I’m feeling, going through, and where I am. My motivation could be a really cool riff I stumble upon while experimenting with sounds, or it could be a specific situation that I need to write about to get off my chest.

You wrote, produced and composed the first Jean Jacket album, set to release on March 25. How would you describe it in 3 words?

What was the most challenging situation that you have experienced as a band so far?
The business aspect of it is tough. As a band, we have been through a lot in just a short year of being together. Sometimes you have bad advice or people around you that don’t really have your best interest at heart. A band is like a relationship. So I think it takes work, trust, and communication, and I guess there have been some times where that has been sacrificed, so that has been the most challenging part of it thus far.

You have been recently signed to Decades Records. What’s the main difference that you experienced between being an independent band and a signed one?
They take care of a lot of promotional things, where as an independent band it wouldn’t be as easy to do all of those things. It makes a big difference and it also takes a load off, allowing me to work on just the music versus a bunch of other things we don’t want to have to even think about.

Tonight you will be playing at Death’s Door party. What can the crowd expect from Jean Jacket’s live show?
Oh yes, I’m very excited for Death’s Door. It seems like a really cool party. Playing live is my fav part of the whole thing so I think that def comes across. Steph is a genius and brings so much to the Jacket. We also have visuals during the show so it creates a more immersive set. We tend to play more upbeat stuff so expect a good time. No ego, no frills. Just grab a drink and dance.

Sus melodías electrónicas surrealistas y complejas generaron un gran impacto en la escena local y se están preparando para influenciar a los amantes del electro indie a nivel nacional con su disco debut, que saldrá al mercado el 25 de marzo.

El grupo, que empezó como un proyecto solista, tiene integrantes aleatorios, que acompañan al front man Harlowe Gee, incluyendo a Stephanie Taylor de State Of, Lauren Suarez  e integrantes de la banda de Miami Million Young.

Antes de su show en Death’s Door en The Garret, tuvimos la oportunidad de hacerle a Harlowe algunas preguntas sobre su música y sus shows hipnóticos.

Hace bastantes años que participas de diferentes proyectos musicales. ¿Porque decidiste crear Jean Jacket?
Participé de muchísimos proyectos que no encajaban realmente conmigo. Jean Jacket es el resultado de finalmente crear y tener un proyecto que es completamente mío, al cual puedo manipular de la manera que quiero. Fue una dirección que tomé naturalmente pero quería crear algo más honesto e íntimo que lo que había hecho anteriormente.  Fue un momento bastante complicado en mi vida y sentí que ser lo más real y vulnerable que pudiera con migo mismo sería la mejor terapia. A su vez me inspiré en mucho arte que había alrededor mío en ese momento, factor que también quise reflejar en mi música.

Melodías surrealistas y complejas. ¿Cuál es tu principal motivación al componer las canciones de Jean Jacket?
No hay una principal motivación definida a la hora de componer mis canciones. The Jacket es el resultado de emociones espontáneas o experiencias de todos mis sentidos. Este disco no sólo tuvo que ver con mi entorno en ese momento, sino con mi situación. Esencialmente mis canciones son el resultado de lo que esté sintiendo en ese momento, de lo que esté pasando y del lugar en donde este. Mi motivación puede ser un muy buen riff con el que me cruzo experimentando con sonidos, o puede ser una situación específica de la que tengo que escribir y sacar de mi cuerpo.

Escribiste, produjiste y compusiste el primer disco de Jean Jacket. ¿Qué 3 palabras usarías para describirlo?

¿Cuál fue el mayor desafío que se les presentó hasta el momento?
El aspecto de negocio detrás es complicado. Como banda hemos atravesado mucho en solo un año . A veces hemos tenido malos consejos o gente alrededor nuestro que no quería realmente lo mejor para nosotros.  Una banda es como una relación. Por eso creo que lleva trabajo, confianza, comunicación y creo que a veces eso fue sacrificado. Eso ha sido el mayor desafío hasta el momento.

Hace poco firmaron con Decades Records. ¿Cuál es la principal diferencia entre ser un artista independiente y pertenecer a una discográfica?
Ellos se encargan de muchas cuestiones promocionales, cosas que como una banda independiente no serían fáciles de lograr. Hace una diferencia muy grande y también nos saca un peso de encima, permitiéndome trabajar sólo en la música , en lugar de tener que hacer un montón de otras cosas de las cuales no queremos ni pensar.  

Esta noche van a estar tocando en la fiesta Death’s Door. ¿Qué es lo que puede esperar el publico de un show en vivo de Jean Jacket?
Si, estoy super emocionado por Death’s Door. Parece una fiesta muy buena. Tocar en vivo es mi parte preferida. Stephany es una genia y aporta muchísimo a The Jacket. También tenemos visuales durante el show para crear un set más completo. Tendemos a tocar en vivo cosas más brillantes así que esperen pasar una noche genial. Sin egos no superficialidades. Sólo a tomar un trago y a bailar.
