As we announce last month, UK iconic Punk Rock band, The Stranglers, will be releasing a new album in the US on May 28. ‘Giants’ is a record that will give fans and newcomers the chance to experience and enjoy brand new material that remains ever so true to that classic Stranglers sound, and at their very best.
Since their beginnings in 1974, the band has composed hits such as Golden Brown, Peaches, No More Heroes, Skin Deep, and Strange Little Girl, that secured them a firm place in the rock and roll history books. Regularly hitting the headlines with an instinctive nose for controversy and confrontation, The Stranglers created original and dynamic melodies with a bass-driven aggression that influenced many bands to this day.
A month before the release of “ Giants”, JJ Burnel (bass and vocals), shares some details of the longest surviving band from the late 70’s UK music scene.
Hello there. Thank you for showering me with statistics. We don’t have a motto. We once had a period which we described as “truth through provocation” but those days are over I think. Now we are in the situation where we can get on with doing what we do best and try to make sense of this crazy world that we live in. That’s enough, isn’t it?
Life is so short, I prefer to be in awe of everything. I also want to understand as much as I can. A musician is a prism. Part of the pleasure of being one is that you can try to make sense of the world and your own experiences, interpret it in your own unique way and sometimes it just touches other people.
As for the bass, it is a wonderful instrument and so underused and sexy.
Karate has been a savior in my life. The philosophy, the physicality, and the mental strength that I have gained from its discipline and regularity have been a healthy counterpoint to what some might call “rock and roll”. Motorcycling, well, I’ve been on two wheels since I was sixteen so it’s just second nature to me.
How fresh do they sound? I suspect you should ask them.
100% Pure Stranglers.
A few more bald heads. Much broader demographic. No one seems to want to lynch us.
The fact that it really is live. The quality and breadth of the material.
