Magic and Adventure, Mark And The Tiger Takeover LA
You have a great single out, can you tell us more about it?
Thank you so much! The single is called, “Come to Mexico”, it’s a slightly hyperbolized true story about a woman I know. She made a huge impact on my life and then disappeared off into the sunset only to pop back up randomly every once in a blue moon to remind me she’s still around. Definitely the Sally to my Harry!
Tell us about being a band based in Los Angeles!
It’s pretty awesome actually. LA is a city where you can be whoever you want to be, so for an artist it can be very freeing and inspiring. There are so many iconic music venues in this city. And it’s wild to think about how many bands, famous and infamous, have played at the same venues I’m playing at now!
What do you find to be your very own “Magic” ?
I was told by a friend once that whenever he comes to one of my shows he feels permission to be the truest expression of himself without any fear of judgement. It was the best compliment I’ve ever gotten and I like to think that is my real magic. I’ve spent so much of my life worrying
about the image I was presenting to the world and shaping myself to be something I wasn’t. I’m so happy to NOT do that anymore and I want to create spaces for people to be free and to express themselves authentically!
What is the story behind Mark and The Tiger and your beginnings?
I’ve always been a singer and I’ve always loved, music but I never dreamed of making it a career. I was going to be a veterinarian until I took my first college chemistry class! I moved to LA to be an actor and after a few years was feeling pretty depressed and really uninspired. I’ve always loved Florence and the Machine and in 2012 I got a ticket to go see her by myself at the Hollywood Bowl. I will never forget watching her dance barefoot across that stage and thinking to myself, “THAT is what you’re supposed to be doing!” And every day since then has brought me closer and closer to that point!
Have you always known music is something you wanted to do?
Haha, see above! But again, no. I knew it was always going to be a part of my life. But it was something deeply personal to me. I’ve always sung for myself. But when I saw Flo doing her thing I realized how much I wanted to share my music with the rest of the world too!
Do you have any shows planned for 2020?
YES! On January 3rd I’ll be playing at the Whiskey a Go Go on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles! I can’t tell you howe excited I am to be able to add my name to the huge roster of legends that have performed there! I’ve also got a bunch of other gigs lined up all over the city and hopefully I’ll be on the list for a few festivals!
