Pore is an exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Martha Friedman in collaboration with choreographer/dancer Silas Riener that will be featured at Locust Projects throughout Miami Art Week until January 9th, 2016.

For her first major show in Miami, Friedman honors the four different humors that inspired the theory behind Western medicine for over two thousand years. The humors are black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. Essentially, the theory holds that the human body is filled with four basic substances, called humors, which are in balance when a person is healthy. All diseases and disabilities supposedly resulted from an excess or deficit of one of the above.

To represent each of the four humors Friedman has created four vividly colored sheets of rubber – made by pouring around 1000lbs of the material onto Locust Projects’ floor – that have been rigged to cascade from the rafters. Each site-specific sculpture has a costume attached and is colored to reference one of the four humors.

During specific dates and times, Silas Riener will interact with the installation performing a choreographed series of movements that explore the qualities associated with each humor.

Besides the four main installations, Friedman also presents a series of metal sculptures including a monumental-scale necklace that hangs from the ceiling, based on an original piece constructed from a repurposed drain cover and paperclips.

Rubber and steel are two materials frequently used by the artist as a way to explore with shape and substances and to challenge the common expectations of how everyday objects should look like. Based on this principle, Pore explores the vulnerability of human body and the limits of perception.

Para su primer exhibición individual en Miami, Friedman rinde tributo a los cuatro humores, la teoría que inspiró las bases de la medicina occidental por más de dos mil años.  Los humores son bilis negra, bilis, flema y sangre. Esencialmente la teoría sostiene que el cuerpo contiene cuatro sustancias básicas llamadas humores, cuando están balanceadas la persona está saludable. Según este enunciado, todas las enfermedades son supuestamente causadas por el exceso o deficiencia de alguno de los elementos anteriormente nombrados.     

Para representar cada uno de los humores, Friedman creó cuatro capas individuales de goma derramando más de 450 kilos del material en el piso de la galería de arte. Cada sitio específico de la instalación tiene un traje del color que hace referencia al humor.

Durante días y horarios estipulados Silas Riener interactuará con la instalación ejecutando una coreografía y series de movimientos que representan a las cualidades asociadas con cada humor.

Además de las cuatro secciones principales, Friedman también presenta una serie de esculturas de metal incluyendo un collar de dimensiones extraordinarias que cuelga del techo, creado sobre una pieza original construida a base de clips para papel.

Goma y acero son dos de los materiales usados generalmente por la artista para explorar con la forma y las sustancias, desafiando las asunciones de cómo los objetos debería lucir en la realidad cotidiana. Basándose en este principio, Pore explora la vulnerabilidad del cuerpo humano y los límites de la percepción.
