Have you ever wonder how the world would look like if everything was upside down? Or what would happen if the characters trapped in your fantasies could come to life? Staring at Michael Cheval’s paintings could be the answer to that.
Michael Cheval is a Russian leading contemporary artist, member of the New York’s National Arts Club. He specializes in Absurdist paintings, drawings and portraits. For him “absurdity” is an inverted side or reality, a reverse side of logic. His paintings are a map of his journey into illusion.
In this interview Cheval gives us a guided tour into his fantasies and art work.
Art is pretty much tradition in your family; you started drawing when you where a little boy. What did you like to draw back then? Were all the ludic characters part of your artistic life already?
Michael Cheval – When I was a boy I loved drawing people and horses. Very often I represented battle scenes – knights in armor, Indians and cowboys… These were the kind of illustrations in the books that my parents read to me and that later I started reading myself. I drew with enthusiasm, plunging into the process, and then there was nothing else around for me. For that reason I often had trouble at school. I was fascinated by drawing, even during class, so I missed everything that happened in the classroom. But I could not help myself. Drawing has always been my main passion.
You defined absurdity as “an inverted side or reality, a reverse side of logic”. Why did you choose this genre for inspiring your art?
I’ve been looking for a term that can define the style in which I work. Maybe “absurd” is not the best word for it, but I do not find a better one. Anyone who knows the history of theater and literature remembers “Theatre of the Absurd” – a group of plays of absurdist fiction written by a number of primarily European playwrights in the late 1950s-. After tracing the history of the absurd works in literature, we can highlight the writings of Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll. I believe that the principle of “absurd” can work not only for literature but for fine art as well.
For me “Absurd” is a way of thinking, a way of thought transference. This is a kind of “radio frequency” on which I broadcast my ideas. And the audience, whose brain is able to work on this “radio frequency”, can easily understand what I’m talking about in my paintings.
In most of your paintings you tell a story. As you once stated, they are “puzzles whose code needs to be discovered”. Where do all this stories come from? Do they come from your imagination or you get inspired in situations that you experience in real life?
I take the themes for my paintings from everywhere. It can be a movie or theater, novels or history books, anecdotes told by friends or a story that I dreamed about. The world around us is full of things that can inspire us. You need to wish for an inspiration. And for this it is necessary to be constantly evolving, to be interested, to be tuned to the “radio frequency”, to which I referred earlier.
What is the importance of magic in your paintings? Do you believe in magic?
Of course I believe in magic. I believe in the magic of art, I believe in the magic of the beauty, which is able to convert people’s souls, to make them kinder and tolerant. All kind of art has the same goal: to make the world better.
Golden, bright green, deep blue skies. How do you manage to create that intensity of color?
I work with a multi-layer technique. Masters of the Italian Renaissance and Dutch masters, who I really admire, used this technique. Layered painting technique allows you to create complex and intense colors, imposing one transparent layer of paint on top of another. This is similar to when you add a few colored glasses together and get a rich and complex color. It’s a long work because you have to wait for the complete layer to dry before starting with the next layer.
Music and poetry are often included in your paintings. What is the importance of this other art expressions in your life?
Music and poetry are part of me, and they are part of ART. All of them are in harmony. I try to live in harmony and I can’t completely separate one from the other. I often include musical instruments into the compositions of my paintings – with this, I want the audience to hear the sound, to bring another dimension to the fine art and make it multi-faceted. I use poetry as metaphors that I translate into the language of painting and I make them visual.
Most of your work generates a visual, even sentimental, impact to the one who is looking at it. What do you want to express trough your paintings?
World is reflected and refracted in me, like a prism. And I just reflect it back…
Do you have any favorite among your paintings?
I know my best works, and less successful works. And of course, I have my favorite paintings. But I wouldn’t want to specifically name them. I think it is enough that I know about them…
You paint using the language of dreams. Do your dreams look like your paintings?
No, fortunately my paintings do not look like my dreams. All ideas come to me, when my brain is awake. I do not take drugs in order to see or feel something. I don’t need them. Dreams are usually incoherent and when waking up, people can’t understand why they saw the dream. Even if the dream was very beautiful, it’s hard to describe it when you are awake. I have “day dreams”, a kind of trance in which I dive in when the inspiration comes. Inspiration is the best tranquilizer.

Dorados, verdes brillantes, cielos azul profundo…
