Music videos that feel like a piece of cinema crafted specifically to suit the aesthetic of their artist are amazing, no question about it. But those that capture life as we know it from a truly human perspective are something more; they’re iconic, and I think Kevin Phillips was thinking a lot about this as he developed the concept for his new video “Order My Steps.” In collaboration with Donnie Breeze, “Order My Steps” is a charming single all by itself without the addition of a visual component – however, that being said, its music video is perhaps the perfect amalgamation of its multilayered theme and an artistic expressiveness not possible outside of this setting.

The video for “Order My Steps” is a multi-act document, and despite the negative overtone that is implied early on in its story, we conclude with a surprising amount of optimism. The feel-good energy is only partly tethered to the spirituality embodied in the lyricism; frankly, you could sell people on a lot of different ideologies and mere ideas with a harmony like the heavenly treasure situated in the eye of this stormy ballad. It’s heart-melting on numerous levels, and easily enough to bring me back to the discography of both Phillips and Breeze in the future.
As far as the track itself is concerned, “Order My Steps” is stunningly soulful in its melodies and quite contemporary in its integration of a sleek rap flow, but I don’t know that compositional frills were necessarily something we were supposed to focus on here. There’s simply too much passion within the narrative, too much of an emphasis placed on the relationship between harmony and lyric for this to be the case, and while many would be quick to brand this song gospel because of this, I’d just as soon consider it vintage R&B for a modern generation.

Kevin Phillips and Donnie Breeze turn in a real stunner of a new song and music video this winter that has captured my attention effortlessly in the month of December, and while it’s not the lone track of its kind worth examining, it’s definitely made my list of pre-NYE must-listens for R&B enthusiasts in 2020. There’s no telling what these two might accomplish if they spend some more time in the recording studio together, and although this is a grand introduction to their chemistry, my gut tells me it’s actually only a taste of what they’re fully capable of in the proper circumstances.
