Though not considered an entirely new sound, Run the Jewels released their self titled debut album in June of 2013. Their relatively new album, Run the Jewels 2, continues to amaze newfound ears. Some of you may be familiar with Brooklyn (NY) rapper/ producer “El P” (Jamie Meline) and rapper “Killer Mike” (Michael Render) of Atlanta (GA) from previous musical efforts. Unfortunately, neither artist has seen much commercial success individually, but a new wave of eminence could be upon them.
Due to mainstream outlets, most audiences are oblivious to the existence of this musical partnership; this latest album is just beginning to unearth them from the underground. The duo seems to embody the offbeat production arrangement found on Run the Jewels 2 and the off the beaten path type of lyricism encourages your belief in their talent. The lyrics seem to hug and clench to the offbeat production arrangement manufactured by El P; the typical hardcore arrangement of beats and production that you would expect from him.
If you’re looking for a dance friendly album, this is not for you. The timing and beat arrangements spellbind the listener into a constant head bang. The constant lyrical jabs and combos leaves the listener wanting more abuse. Relatively late in their careers and through this alternative rap partnership, both artists are just beginning to see a rise in their popularity. With the amount of talent depicted on Run the Jewels 2, this underground duo may soon blossom from a crack in the sidewalk.
