School of X _ New Friend

Watch School of X’s Cinematic Video for “New Friend”

Danish producer/multi-instrumentalist School of X shared “New Friend,” his last single in the leadup to his sophomore album, Dancing Through the Void, out September 24th via label Tambourhinoceros. Accompanying the single is a new cinematic music video as well.

‘New Friend’ is the song that represents this album in the best and broadest way… it contains the width of the album” says Rasmus Littauer, the Copenhagen-based musician behind School of X.

“I wanted to make a laid-back song as grand as possible,” says Littauer. With strings from famed arranger Davide Rossi, who has penned some of the biggest string parts in pop history with The Verve, Coldplay, etc., “New Friend” launches into an entirely new dimension of anthemic for School of X, whose previous singles have already been touted as such.

Rasmus Littauer has steadily been gaining admiration over the past decade for collaborations in different capacities with Deb Never, Clairo, Spencer Zahn (Half Waif, Empress Of), Ana Perrote (Hinds), MØ and many, many more. But over the past couple years, his solo work as School of X has started to take center stage. And with his third release in three years about to drop, “New Friend” feels like the slow-motion unveiling of his most refined, highest form to date.

“New Friend” comes with a music video that echoes that feeling. Directed by Copenhagen/London based Stella Malfilatre (previous work with Vincent Moon, Aldous Harding and Nilüfer Yanya among others), it’s an emotive portrait of Littauer’s confident and artistic indie-pop persona. With a sombre, yet hopeful demeanor, we watch him slowly picking the petals of a flower as he reflects on the song’s message:

“It’s about that you should always treat people with respect. Even if the romance is over and you’re leaving someone, then you should pay your respects,”

School of X’s album Dancing Through The Void (Sep 24) is a wide-ranging indie-pop opus, and “New Friend” is his last reminder that it shouldn’t be missed. Watch the video below and pre-order the album here.
