Welcome back to Too Much Love’s weekly round-up of music-centric events we deem MUST SEE. This weeks line-up looks better than ever, with female artist focused events seeming to be blowing up right, left and center! As my heart fills with pride and hope at the flourishing and (ever more) inclusive music scene this big town has to offer, here are the top picks!
Thursday, August 2nd – Girls Can Spin Too in association with (F)empower
Artist collective and Miami art scene revolutionizers (F)empower have kept busy recently, spearheading one of their latest projects: ‘Girls Can Spin Too’. The 8 week collaborative course between fem artists/djs and students, has taught 14 girls the basic foundations of song selection and mixing! (F)empower’s manifesto of empowerment, inclusion, and the infiltration of historically male-dominated fields, has truly shone through on this one. This Thursday, we will all have the pleasure of checking out the graduates showcase! The event will be hosted at Floyd Miami, with student’s sets from 9pm to 12am, and special guests/instructors Pam Jones & VAKDEVII closing out the night from 12am – 1am. Entry is complimentary, with an option of donating to (F)empower. For a great night of music and to keep awesome projects like these going, check it out. I for one can’t wait. More info
Saturday, August 4th – FLOAT: An illuminated parade at Vizcaya ft. PAW
Head over to the stunning and historic Vizcaya this Saturday for a unique event! Honoring the third and final installment of the Processional Arts Workshops summer residency, the estate will be hosting FLOAT: “An illuminated parade exploring the depths of Vizcaya’s past and present connection to the Sea”. In collaboration with community members and volunteers, the performance/ installation will, in procession, (and in possession of illuminated lanterns), travel from Vizcaya Village across South Miami Avenue to the Main House of Vizcaya. The parade acts as meditation on the journey of James Deering, Vizcaya’s founder, from agricultural heartland to untamed seascape – while conjuring his vision of Vizcaya as a nautical fantasy. For a little something different, some beautiful visuals, and a thoughtful contemplation of Miami’s history, head over to The Viscaya Museum and Gardens. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. More info

Our favorite dive joint Las Rosas is at it again, lending its grounds and ‘nothing but trouble vibes’ to the second edition of ‘Lagrimas’ this Saturday: A night of post-punk and deathrock. The night is set to have live performances from South Florida post-punk outfit Obsidian, darkwavers Lipstick Alley Inc., and some post-punk melodies from locals, Taxi. If that isn’t enough to take your fancy, we will also be graced by the dark Rotations of: dj Rippin Kittin, dj Flor Frances and Nayra! The event starts at 10pm, and is free of charge! More info

Sunday, August 5th: MGRC 2018 Grand Finale Showcase
MGRC, the brainchild of founders Steph Taylor, Emile Milgrim and Heather Burdick, is closing out its fourth successful year with a showcase to end all showcases. The all girls rock camp, that sets out to: “Use music and performance as a platform to promote self esteem, community, and creative expression, for young women…” comes as the result of a massive and inspiring collaboration between volunteer (and all femme) musicians, dj’s and instructors. The week long program covers everything from live performance coaching, and instrument instruction, all culminating in a grand finale show which will this year be going down at The ground at Space. Even more impressive, these talented young musicians will be playing original music, so don’t miss out on what’s sure to be an amazing night. The event starts at at 5pm and you can grab your tickets here or via the MGRC website. More info
