Though Pop seems to be the referent, there’s so much more than that going on with GERLE. The Cali-based songstress has an undeniable affinity for the highly emotional, with her lyrics often touching on subjects near to the heart, such as romance, honesty, disillusionment, and heartbreak. Her musical instincts speak to her upbringing touring on the road with her mother, while her excellent songwriting shows the keen penmanship of someone who writes from longing and experience, so it’s no surprise that Gerle’s vulnerable music is one that seeks to “cure and repair”.
It’s pretty clear that Gerle does things her way, if not necessarily in a rebellious way, then certainly through the originality of her lovingly crafted sound. She intimates difficult emotions and ideas of her own lived experience, articulating them through vivid metaphors set to the warmest and most genuine indie-pop sound this side of Foster The People.
Slowly but, Steady, Gerle has been gaining traction and notoriety, because music like hers doesn’t stay hidden for long. She has had bits and pieces of her music show up on different TV shows like Jersey Shore and Married to Medicine, while she’s lent her likeness to The Grammy Foundation and has even been a featured guest on RuPaul’s DragRace.
More recently, Gerle began working with Grammy-award-winning producer ToneDef (Santana, Green Day, Briston Maroney) producing a string of singles and honing that lively and emotive sound of hers. Her latest single is called “REST STOP”, and it captures her essence perfectly.
Conjuring up images of lonesome roads and even more lonesome Rest Stops, Gerle takes the time to gather her thoughts and meditate on certain painful events. What exactly happened? Well, it’s up for you to decide, to project your own memories and feelings into the song. “REST STOP” is about being weary and confused, about needing time to process things before moving on, and as a listener, you get to do some of the emotional legwork by relating the song to your own struggles.
