Since its inception in 2020, Island Wave has been dedicated to promoting Caribbean culture through music and community engagement. From the hands of its founders, artist Kalpee and Miss Vivianna from FVP Global, Island Wave provided a platform for Caribbean artists to showcase their talents globally creating a worldwide impact.
Island Wave once again electrified SXSW this year, returning for its fourth consecutive showcase as the Official Afro-Caribbean Stage. The Flamingo Cantina in Austin, Texas, was transformed into a vibrant hub of Caribbean culture this past March. The 2024 lineup included an array of heritage artists, such as Prince Amine from Antigua/Morocco, African heritage artist Mauvie from Ghana, and BBC Radio Wales presenter Aleighcia Scott of Jamaican-Welsh heritage.
Backed by MusicTT, the show showcased the talents of Tobagonian artist XAV, who is set to release a new EP this fall. Jamaican powerhouse Sevana and Hector “Roots” Lewis, both featured in the Bob Marley film “One Love,” delivered standout performances.
Together, they established the Official Caribbean Stage, providing a platform for both established and up-and-coming Caribbean artists to perform for a global audience. The stage featured a dynamic mix of genres, including reggae, dancehall, and calypso, with Island Wave promoting genre-blending collaborations for a distinctive and thrilling experience.
Haitian artist J Perry made a triumphant Island Wave debut, headlining the event with a powerful performance. Joined by the dynamic Haitian hip-hop queen Kanis, the duo electrified the crowd with their hit single “Ayyy” and offered inspiring words of hope amidst Haiti’s current struggles. Reflecting on the experience, J Perry remarked, “My first time at the Island Wave South by Southwest show was amazing. It’s a true magical movement connecting Island talents.”
Brian Hobbs, Director of Music Fest Programming at SXSW, emphasized Island Wave’s significance: “This marks our fourth year supporting Island Wave. Their efforts in showcasing Caribbean creatives on an international platform are commendable. We eagerly anticipate their return at SXSW 2025.”
Island Wave understands the importance of addressing social issues within the Caribbean community. Central to their efforts is the Roots Rhymes Resilience Campaign, which aligns with Caribbean Heritage Month and Windrush Day each year. This dynamic initiative celebrates the enduring spirit and traditions of the Caribbean islands. Through the Roots Rhymes Resilience platform, artists act as cultural ambassadors, sharing their stories and perspectives with the world, and promoting a strong sense of unity and cultural pride.
Island Wave continues to champion Caribbean culture and heritage, creating opportunities for artists and fostering a sense of community through music. With submissions now open for the 2025 lineup, the platform invites Afro-Caribbean artists to join its mission of celebrating and promoting Caribbean artistry on the global stage.
