Brenda Carsey’s Ode to Womanhood Got a New Video.
Coming fresh after the release of her new highly-anticipated new album, “Cognizance”, Brenda Carsey is still hard at work shining lights into some of the tracks that make up this magnificent opus. The latest song to get this treatment is “Unfortunate Men” with killer visuals that inspire and enlighten.
Brenda Carsey is a Los Angeles-based vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Her music has been described as brilliant, timeless, playful, and larger-than-life R&B/Soul and Progressive Pop; an evocative songwriter with rich lyricism. Carsey delivers an engaging, energetic show, with her unmistakably unique sound rooted in the classic pop diaspora.
Described as a “Chamber Pop anthem”, this song takes a deep look at what it means to be a woman in this day and age, with the name clearly spelling out the meaning of the lyrics: Through the pain and hardship, the sublime moments of beauty and strength found in womanhood are truly marvelous, and us men are ‘unfortunate’ in that we’re not privy to them.
The haunting orchestral elements give a solemn air full of a well-earned sense of dramatism, but it is Brenda’s Bondesque vocal signature that really sets everything apart sound-wise. She’s simply a superb interpreter who puts emotion and theatrics first and foremost, with beauty deriving from her ability to set the scene and make her lyrics play out in your mind- Brenda knows how to tell a story and her voice is the perfect vehicle for the kind she wants to tell.

Created by Sharon Like, the visuals for ‘Unfortunate Men’ reflect a bit of a stream-of-consciousness that somewhat follows and mimics the lyrics, if not literally then at least by feeling alone. The beautifully hand-animated music video was drawn frame by frame to create something that looks sufficiently abstract and sufficiently organic so as to stimulate the viewer’s imagination and enhance the valuable insight that Carsey and her piano are imparting to us.
