Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Wayne Whittaker, the creative force behind Pigeon Club, confronts themes of loss and the relentless march of time in his latest single, “Ancient History.“ This introspective track is a little taste of Pigeon Club’s upcoming album, “Another Year in the Minors,” due this summer. 

“Ancient History” unfolds as a cinematic indie-folk ballad, that blends elements of Neil Young’s introspective rock, the meticulously crafted narratives of Andy Shauf, and the undeniable pop sensibilities of The Beatles. For the inspiration behind the song, Whittaker recounts the dual impact of facing the mortality of his grandmother and the sudden loss of a close friend from high school. These experiences spurred him to contemplate the fleeting nature of life and the enduring power of cherished memories.  

“My grandmother was in her early 90s when I moved to LA, and I knew that realistically I only had a handful of opportunities to see her again, so that’s originally what I started writing about,” Whittaker explains. “But then, early last year, I lost a close friend from high school, Pat. He taught me so much about life, friendship, and music – all within the small window of time that high school offers. A week or so after his funeral, we tracked ‘Ancient History.’”

Whittaker’s background as a multi-instrumentalist and seasoned sideman, having worked with artists like Dawes, Diane Coffee, and Haerts, shines through in the song’s rich instrumentation.
