Reuben Wu, better known as the member of British band Ladytron, has another strong passion besides music. Capturing the unknown for many beings and exploring faraway places looking for the right one to eternalize in his pictures is what motivates him.
While touring with his band, Reuben had the opportunity to visit many lands and to run into particular characters that awaken his passion for photography. In this interview, Wu shares his toughs regarding this art and tells the limits he has pushed for being able to have unique experiences.
Reuben – As soon as I picked up a pencil I think. My first passion is drawing, although I don’t practice nearly enough nowadays.
It’s impossible to put your finger on exactly what you are trying to express. I know exactly what I don’t want to express though, and that is creating uninspired and ordinary work.
Yes, it’s something I’d love to explore. My grandfather was a famous cinematographer in Hong Kong, I often wonder what would have happened if I had chosen a different career path.
In general I like to find places and things which are not easily accessible. It’s not so much about the photography, it’s about the experience I’m after. I rode a bicycle into the Atacama Desert in the middle of the night under a full moon and spent 5 hours exploring. There was no living thing around for miles. Just me, the bike, and a very heavy camera. I had quite literally forgot about time, it was completely absorbing.
They are just colors that appeal to me. For some strange reason, I don’t like green much.
Well without my travels with music, I would have never picked up the camera in any serious way. There is no better way to experience both than a good old-fashioned road trip.
Yes, there’ll be a new Ladytron record in 2013. No plans for another book until I find the right publisher.
