“Move like you…breathe like you…like you love yourself.” – Amy D. ‘Like You’
Some might say self-love has been lost on the waves of the internet, causing a ripple effect of comparison. Shall we change the narrative? Neo-soul artist Amy D. reminds us to celebrate, not hide, our individual diversities in her upbeat groove, ‘Like You.’ You can’t help but smile over the gentle organs and Amy’s smooth, expressive vocals:
This colorful video was produced in Oakland with a crew of San Francisco Bay womxn, daughters, and leaders. “As human beings, and particularly, as womxn, we need positive reinforcement and reminders that we are enough. Affirming self-love is powerful.” Amy continues, “It is more about owning our innate worthiness than it is about measuring up to standards that exist outside of our bodies and minds. In the lyrics to “Like You,” I invite the listener to come back to their own magic- to believe and affirm their greatness.”
Amy’s musical vision was brought to life with the help of keyboardist and producer Michael Aaberg (Goapele, Lalah Hathaway, Ambrose Akinmusire) who she also recruited for her album, Like You. Keep an eye out for the rest of the songbird’s music, as she revives jazz, delivers soul, and shines a light on empowerment.
