A Sparkling Gem: Zev and Polun Team Up to Release 'Every Diamond' from 'Broke in Bel Air' EP
Ah, it's Monday again. Some people hate the start of the week. Most of us are back to our routines but this doesn't have to be tedious. Let me help you kick off this week with something amazing. You might have heard of Zev and polun. Individually they have an impressive track record, sporting several songs, and producing and writing credits under their belts. They're now joining forces to deliver an exquisite EP, starting with their first song "Every Diamond" and it promises to be a very special experience.
Digging a little into how this alliance was made. In August of 2022, Zev and polun spent two weeks in Bel Air creating music for other artists. Despite not knowing it, they were actually recording their future EP - "Broke in Bel Air." Living like a student in paradise, eating leftover pasta, writing music by the pool while gazing out across the canyons to the Getty and the Pacific. They were ignited by the deep irony of it all. As they navigate relationships, and careers as artists, and manage ever-fluctuating mental health, they seamlessly weave frustrations from their financial, social, and personal lives into uplifting anthems. In theory, polun and Zev are worlds apart. Despite their differences, they have forged a strong bond as creatives and friends through their work. The five tracks on “Broke in Bel Air" represent the ups and downs they both relate to, but the lasting bond they formed along the way.
"Every Diamond" is the first taste we get of what’s to come on “Broke in Bel Air”, and I'll say it from the start: They have a radio hit on their hands. With an extremely catchy rhythm and Zev’s stunning voice, the song is a delight to listen to. polun did a great job producing this one, and we must thank him for it. The lyrics are extremely clever and well-crafted, with a chorus that is an absolute earworm. The song is an undeniable bop and the production is on point. The instrumental work is really impressive - the way the beat flows, the rhythm, and the way the synths and bass create an amazing atmosphere. The lyrics are really creative and it's easy to connect with them. The song has all the elements of a successful radio hit - a catchy chorus and great production.
“Every Diamond is, at its surface, about superficiality. That being said, the true inspiration comes from Zev’s turbulent and ever-changing state of mental health. The characters in this song are Zev’s triggers, the imagery represents his insecurities, and the stark upright bass is his canvas. At the end of the day, this song begs the question, how well do you really know someone?"
"Broke in Bel Air" promises to be a remarkable EP. "Every Diamond" was an excellent introduction to it. "Everything" and "Airplane Mode" are coming next, scheduled for release soon.
