Bonded Jacky wants to talk about "Stacy's Mom" too I remember sometime in mid-2003 when MTV (Latinoamérica) still had music videos on, I would get home from Middle School and make a bee line to grandma's big TV. At that time of day, Mom and her were occupied in the kitchen, and thus I was free to forget whatever I had accidentally learned that day with the stupifying beams of the Idiot Box, all thanks to the magic of cable piracy. To be perfectly honest, back then I was almost exclusively interested in Rock music, and while Power pop and Pop-punk annoyed me to no end (I still had a soft spot for Blink-182) there was one song that really struck a chord with me, and several of my friends at school for reasons that I think should be obvious to anyone who remembers that video. if it's a little before you time, please do check it out before you go on.
"Stacy's Mom" is Fountains of Wayne third single from their 2003 album "Welcome Interstate Managers". The song was an instant hit, and so was the video, of course, so much so that today we're talking about it 20 years later, except that this time it's all thanks to Queer LA-based artist Maddie Ballard, better known as "Bonded Jacky". The moniker, Bonded Jacky, comes from the nautical term meaning sweet cake or tobacco, which is perfectly absurd. We’re all one big walking paradox with a story to tell. Bonded Jacky’s upcoming EP, ‘Cool People Don’t Exist’ encapsulates the universal tendency to hide our imperfections and present a “cooler” version of ourselves, out of fear of rejection. In Bonded Jacky's version, a few adjustments turn "Stacy's Mom" into a song about queer discovery, patterned in the rainbow pastel hues of a feathery dream-pop ballad. Jacky describes the song as a "Retelling [...], through a queer lens. I wanted to re-contextualize and slow this tune down to add a layer of emotion and vulnerability. I feel like it’s often guys who talk about hot moms, but I want to talk about hot moms too. "
