Today I want to introduce you to an artist like no other. Australian bluesman Rhyece O'Neill has a very rich and diverse musical background. Born and raised on the banks of the Murray River in Yorta Yorta country in North-East Victoria, O'Neill's upbringing in a culturally vibrant environment has undoubtedly influenced his soulful and fascinating sound. Having toured internationally and shared the stage with renowned bands such as Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Scientists, White Denim, and Hanni El Khatib. O'Neill's talent and passion for music shine through in every live performance. Legendary is the right word to describe them, alluring audiences with his commanding stage presence and powerful baritone vocals reminiscent of renowned singers like Mark Lanegan, Leonard Cohen, and Jeffrey Lee Pierce.
With a 79' Chrysler Valiant he wanders Australia, alongside the spirit of his late dog, Sonny, The Black Crow Kelpie. This loyal companion has not only inspired him to push forward but has also become an emblematic figure in his musical journey. Using his essential skills as a songwriter, poet, and novelist he entwines his experiences and emotions into true-to-heart compositions. In 2019, O'Neill released "Los Diablos," which was live taped in Bohemia, Czech Republic, and represented a major turning point in his career. Working alongside legendary engineer Milan Cimfe, known for his work with iconic artists like David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Kris Kristofferson, the songs came to life with a timeless quality you don't get easily anywhere else. In 2020, he was also part of the "Tinny Brigade" that rescued people stranded on rooftops during the Lismore floods. For his courageous efforts, O'Neill received a bravery award, a testament to his selflessness and willingness to help others in times of need.
The pandemic hit the world hard, forcing artists to adapt to new circumstances and challenges. O'Neill, true to his resilient spirit, embarked on a journey along the east coast of Australia, from his home in South Gippsland to the windy shores of Cooktown in far North Queensland. Despite the difficulties posed by the whole situation, his determination to continue with his work remained unwavering. Upon returning to Brisbane, he found himself separated from his bandmates, who were stranded during the Melbourne lockdown. Undeterred, he formed a new band based in Queensland and recorded a double album called "(Not) Stranded." The rough and emotional blues lament was recorded live at Studio Moon Room in Brisbane, and perfectly exhibited his masterwork sound.
In addition to his solo projects, O'Neill has collaborated with songwriter and producer J.B. Paterson on the album "Journey To Bunya." This singular collaboration explores the stories and legends of Indigenous Bushrangers, shedding light on an often overlooked aspect of Australian history. Looking forward, O'Neill is currently writing songs for an upcoming album with Colorado songwriter George Cessna. This exciting collaboration promises to bring together two distinct musical styles and create something truly extraordinary.
"Sonny Liston's Blues" is his newest single.
Taking everything he has learned so far and fashioning the most heartwarming song you will hear this year. O'Neill's voice combined with the soft and mellow acoustic guitar is a joy to listen to. The name takes inspiration from his faithful companion, man's best friend. Not only do we get O'Neill's signature blues but there's a bit of Americana and country within. The result is a magnificent ode that will leave you wishing you could have more. He is a true master of his trade with an unfaltering dedication. This is just a taste of what's to come. With his upcoming album, he's getting ready to satiate our needs for more incredible music. I personally can't wait to have more!
