Nick Campbell is a master of electric bass. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Nick has been a part of the music scene for a while. He spent the vast majority of his youth studying music. He developed his unique sound, described as "superimposing triadic patterns over static harmony" or commonly referred to as "getting modal." He has played as a sideman with several bands and musicians, like Pomplamoose, Scary Pockets, Charlie Puth, Vulfpeck, Meghan Trainor, Raquel Rodriguez, Nigel Hall, Larry Goldings, Theo Katzman, Michael Mayo, and Moonchild. And was the frontman of Shrek is Love (yes, that's the band’s name) and Bear Attack. He's now producing music under the name of Nick Campbell Destroys, using his signature industrial jazz-funk sound. Nick released his first album "Art" in December last year. Packing ten tracks, the radical and groovy album is about being aimless in the face of suffering. Sounds very tragic but it's actually a pretty fun album.
Jacob Mann is a pianist, composer, and arranger based in Los Angeles. He has released three albums with the Jacob Mann Big Band - a 17-piece ensemble featuring rotating musicians performing his original music. Under his own name, he releases synthesizer music created on the Roland Juno-106. Additionally, he is a founding member of jazz/funk groups Max Ox and Shrek is Love. On the other hand, Christian Euman has gained international attention for his unique style of performance and improvisation; shaped during his tenure at Western Michigan University & Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA (now known as Herbie Hancock Institute) headed by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter; touring worldwide with Kurt Elling, Billy Childs & Walter Smith III among others.
Nick Campbell Destroys teamed up with Jacob and Christian on January 8th, 2022 to record Live For the Highest Bidder. As they captured those sounds that day, they reminded me of a jazz trio album played on the Famicom. There is a sense of tradition in this set of music, while also being eclectic and forward-looking. Furthermore, it has a lot of humor. Music on display is unique, and it has a timeless quality that can be enjoyed by anyone. It's difficult to categorize, but easy to appreciate and enjoy. It's the perfect combination of chiptune and jazz.
If I'm being honest, I think the whole concert is a bit of a whirlwind. I've never witnessed something like this. These guys are breaking new ground. Sometimes it feels like something that could fit into a video game, in other parts it feels like you are almost transported into the past with 70/80s vibes. Everything is presented in this weird blend of a news broadcast and a live studio recording. It's a great experience, and it's something that I'd definitely recommend others to experience. This is something that really pushes the boundaries of music and entertainment, and it's truly remarkable. The combination of news show cast and live studio recording creates a unique sound and atmosphere. Furthermore, the fusion of the modern and retro creates a one-of-a-kind experience that is both nostalgic and new. It's something that hasn't been done before and something that will surely inspire others to push the boundaries of music and entertainment.
