Nico Turner Just Released 'LIGHTER': An Introspective And Liberating Track
‘LIGHTER’ is the new release by Nico Turner that has just come out of the oven. It's a dreamy, atmospheric journey through personal growth and introspection. With it, Nico Turner manages to turn various human feelings into music. When a connection is broken because it couldn’t resist anymore or like when you have something, but at the same time you know you don't have it. It is longing and hopelessness at the same time.
The atmospheric tone ‘LIGHTER’ takes is grounded in incredible drum beats -something you can easily expect from Nico since she believes the drummer is the backbone of a band- and a steady subdued bassline. It sounds like waking up in the morning after all the things you tell yourself to get through.
And I'm sorry I was warned but I fought it I was born but I lost it I was born then I died A thousand times Inside your mind
As for the lyrics, despite being quite dark and heartbreaking, it generates a connection with the listener because it addresses human places and recognizable sensations. ‘LIGHTER’ is a call to listen to one's inner voice over the noise of two people trying to maintain a supposed feeling of love for each other. It makes it ok to leave well enough alone with one's self-respect intact.
Nico grew up in a very musical setting. Her father played trumpet a bit with Miles and other jazz rags around. Every wake-up morning was surrounded by bebop, hip hop, or classic rock from her dad, brother, or mother, respectively.
For more than a decade, she has been doing music, after being part of the band VOICEsVOICEs and playing with notable musicians such as Brightblack Morning Light, Prefuse 73, Vincent Gallo, Austra, and most recently, Cat Power.
