"High On Life" is exactly the kind of Jolt you want to start this new year with. Though the song was released in November of 2022, Olya's packing a new wallop with full-on west coast visuals for the single in the preamble for the release of her upcoming album set to land on our plates sometime this year. Musically bred between Los Angeles and New York (the city where she came to 12 years ago with nothing but a backpack and a proverbial headful of dreams), Olya Sonica exemplifies that tightrope act between the slightly different attitudes of each of their rock traditions. On one hand, there's the grimy mid-80s punk bleed from the CBGBs overlapping with the glam-encrusted, and starry-eyed glitz of the Viper Room. Both of these spirits seem to coalesce into the enigmatic and iconic wild Blonde looks of Olya Sonica. The Music video was shot almost entirely in and around L.A. with a little bit of San Francisco showing up for good measure.
Generally speaking, the video balances The glamorous parts of town with some of the grimy back alleys and the hills and backroads reflecting some of California's natural beauty.Of the song, Olya herself says: "High On Life is a feeling, it’s an adrenaline rush you feel in your bones when you connect with something you’re passionately in love with. It calls you to elevate to a higher frequency & become one with it. " But who is Olya Sonica? If the name doesn't ring a bell for you yet, that's because "High on life" is her solo debut. On top of being a singer and songwriter, Olya is also a classically trained pianist and self-taught guitarist, the ideal form of what a rocker should hope to be on their journey to stardom. And If all of these tools weren't enough, Olya also has a unique smokey lady-croon that sets her vocals apart instantly from most of her contemporaries in any genre, giving her some iconic Donita Sparks/Courtney Love vibes. The 'completeness' of Olya's repertoire and her talents' above-standard qualities drew producer Ben Rice's (Norah Jones, Valerie June) skills to her corner.
