On October 19th, Sam Ritchie, the talented Southern California artist, debuted his latest single titled “Blur.” The song explores the desire to stay next to a person, even though it is clearly damaging to the point of being intoxicating. Blur feels vast, lonely, and lurking, yet captivating, just like a midnight thought. From the first second, Sam expresses his desire to take distance and understand that it is best for him.
"I wanted to write a song about escaping but searching too hard for that escape," explains the artist.
"Intoxicated" was the word that started the journey of making this song, and that is how its sound feels. Inspired by alternative/indie artists such as Toro Y Moi and Washed Out, Sam Ritchie made a pop song that feels immersive and carefully crafted. The slow pace of the beat feels meditative and almost soothing, and some arrangements even make it feel dreamy. Sam's melancholic tone accompanied by synth textures create a complex and dense soundscape that evokes both dark and comforting emotions. This captivating sound is sure to resonate with listeners and stay stuck in their heads.
The track was a collaborative effort between Sam and producer Alan Vega, with co-producer Enrique Vega joining the team to help bring it to completion. "I was in the studio and Alan said ‘Why don't we use the word intoxicated and just go from there’ So, I went into the song thinking how someone can be so intoxicating and how dull life can be when they're not around." Sam Ritchie explained.
"Blur" is a captivating melody that plays the perfect soundtrack to be hummed on a lonely night or when taking a night drive blasting the speakers until dawn. Be sure to listen to Blur, now available on all streaming platforms, and stay tuned for what's next in store for Sam Ritchie.
