Sarah Ault’s No Man’s Land: An EP to Listen To, Enjoy and Let Yourself Go

Sarah Ault's voice is one of those that you can easily identify among many thousands. It has very specific characteristics that put each note and each word in a special dimension for those who listen to her. Soft, dense, and deep could be some of the adjectives that describe it.

On the No Man's Land EP, Sarah presents 6 great tracks. Each one of them with its own personality and each one of them with the same dose of musical power. The album addresses the question of how much power we actually have over the arc of our own lives.

No Man's Land, the song that gives the album its name, is written from the perspective of someone who's spent her life pulled between her many possible selves and desires. “I have desires, that's no question / But I am tired and I am grown” sings Ault pointing towards the distance between the life we might want for ourselves and the adult need of giving up what is not useful.

The songs from No Man's Land are guided by an outstanding sensibility. They are songs that could soundtrack a vengeance or a story of love and pain. Organs ring ominously, vocals expand lush and cinematic.

The strength is paired with vulnerability. In "Slow Burn" she sings “The band keeps on playing / like the ship isn't sinking / No rescue coming, lord / what were we thinking,”, where she highlights the pain of watching the world continue to turn as it all falls apart.

Hope is also present in songs like "For Your Love". “I’ve waited for / Too long to let you go,”, she sings a love song to herself, in which she reconnects with her essence.

Sarah's history in music began at an early age when she joined to a prestigious chorus at the district school. However, her parents moved away and Sarah watched her dream fade away. In fact, it took many years for her to return to music.

Instead, she became a famous stylist in the entertainment industry. Along the way, she bumped into frontman and legend Dave Grohl, during the ‘Foo Fighters' horror film Studio 666, with whom she developed a close friendship. “The first day, Dave walked into the trailer and it was as if we’d been friends for years. Kindred spirits, for sure”, she said.

Shortly after, the pandemic hit and everyone had to go home without finishing production. In the midst of solitude, Sarah found herself in front of a piano with scattered ideas that she did not quite know how to channel. So, she sent an unfinished voice memo to Grohl asking for his input, and he replied by offering to record drums on the track, and ultimately the whole EP.

The rest is history that we invite you to discover among the songs on this album.
