"What do you get when a Londoner Latina moves to Paris during a quarter-life crisis, becomes a born-again Christian, and starts making electro-pop music with a local house DJ?" It's Talia Arose, and "Eat" Talia Arose's proposal is fantastically universal, deeply intertwined with her spiritual outlook, and holds a wide-yet-subtle range of aesthetic values that any ear can appreciate. Though her faith is a major component of her music and her life, I do believe that even the most secular of listeners will also find a lot to latch on to with her music.
Talia's sound feels like she could fit in anywhere and everywhere at once, and this is perhaps one of the perks of having such a diverse (for lack of a better word) Background. Born in London to a Colombian Mother and an English Father, Talia's upbringing put her at a cultural crossroads in every sense of the world. From her Colombian side, she inherited a glimpse into unique South American genres such as Salsa, Cumbia, and of course, Vallenato. Her English heritage and home country, on the other hand, fed her a steady and varied diet of everything from folk rock, psychedelia, Pop, and Garage R&B -No doubt she was also inspired by the also incredibly diverse EDM scene of the country as well. Though she started her musical education at age 6 by entering The Sylvia Young Theatre School, her true musical awakening would come until 2012 when a chance meeting a Gospel musician artist at Wilderness festival eventually led her to put her marketing career in the freezer and move to Paris to pursue her dreams. It was in the culturally dense city of Paris that she found renewed influences to nurture the musician in her once again. But that was then, and a lot has happened since. Today Talia is fresh off of the release of her highly EDM-inspired track "EAT", the most spiritually-charged song I've heard in a long time. "EAT" is described by Talia as a song for the spiritually hungry and the spiritually sated alike, those who search for divine nourishment "in a wilderness state".
"In the Bible, the wilderness (desert) is a place where this flourishing and overcoming is even more prominent so shooting this music video in the desert lands of California was a dream come true."
The Song comes along with a music video of its own, Illustrating the aforementioned "Wilderness State". The video was shot in the stark beauty of the Salton Sea and Salvation Mountain, with the barrenness of the desert not only echoing biblical imagery but also making a very clever visual point about even amidst a seemingly empty and hostile wasteland, the "spiritual food" keeps her satisfied -a powerful message to those starving amidst in the material.
