Taylor Castro's latest album, "Intermission," is a stunning testament to the artist's growth and evolution as a musician, It takes listeners on an emotive and introspective journey that showcases Castro's depth and artistry. Intermission EP explores the theme of adolescence. Within its six tracks, Taylor has embraced a level of unfiltered authenticity like never before. She boldly calls out individuals, provides intricate details, and is willingly subject to potential embarrassment, especially for those who may find it uncomfortable to experience emotions without holding back.
“I read something the other day. It said, ‘Life is a public performance on the violin, in which you must learn the instrument as you go along’”, Taylor said. “This is a documentation of the most brutally off-key part in that performance thus far. And it’s so freaking fun.”
This is an album full of contrasts, with more and less accelerated rhythms, with deep lyrics but at the same time maintaining a defined musical identity. When listening to it, you feel the connection that exists between each piece, even though each one of them can tell a different story. Apart from its other features, “Intermission EP” is notable for the way it 'flows' - however clichéd that phrase may sound. As soon as the opening track begins, you feel completely drawn in and it just continues to build captivatingly without interruption.
Castro flaunts her measured sound that is inspired by the pop rock of the 21st century, inspired by an eclectic array of musicians. And throughout all the songs, she shows a powerful vocal softness. In particular, the song 'Perpendicular Lines' feels very deep and manages to immediately connect with the audience in terms of music and lyrics, which are also perfectly achieved, with nuances between high and low notes and an accompanying piano. In it, Taylor's vocal performance blends perfectly with the song's atmosphere for an immersive, dramatic finale that feels like the climax of a good movie.
Raised in Florida, she had a penchant for crafting songs from a young age. As early as five years old, she delighted in weaving words and phrases together, essentially molding herself into a budding writer during her crucial developmental years. Along the way, she polished her performance skills by participating in local musical theater productions and acquiring proficiency in playing the guitar and keyboard. As middle school approached, she delved into recording using Garage Band and sharing her original music online, drawing inspiration from a wide range of artists, including but not limited to Taylor Swift, The Lumineers, The Fray, and The Script.
“My message is it’s okay if you feel like you’ve changed if you’re sad, or if you’re upset,” she leaves off. “It’s okay to experience life. It doesn’t mean you’re not going to get back to that good place. You don’t need to have it all together. If you want to sit down and take a break, you have the right to do so. I hope my music comforts and empowers you, genuinely.”
