Nico Tortorella, who has gained recognition through their notable roles in hit series including Darren Star's "Younger" and AMC's "The Walking Dead: World Beyond," is now exploring uncharted territories and heading into a new chapter of his life having found his true calling after his latest performance in Apple TV's "City on Fire."
In his own statement, “Working on City on Fire awakened a dormant passion within me. It provided the catalyst for me to not only express myself artistically but also to embrace my true essence. The studio became a sanctuary, where I could merge the worlds of character development and personal introspection, ultimately leading me to uncover a new facet of my creative identity.”
This kick-started him to pursue a musical path, bringing to life the melodies and lyrics he had drawn from his mind. As Nico Tortorella's musical journey unfolded, he realized that the music he was creating had a deeper purpose and meaning. The result is an album appropriately titled "Born."
Tortorella's talent and creativity are on full display with nine incredible songs, each showcasing his prowess. While it may seem unconventional at first, the experimentation evident in these tracks is one of their greatest strengths. Don't expect generic pop/rock; instead, be prepared to immerse yourself in a diverse and impactful range of sounds.
The album includes several notable tracks, such as the already-released bi-ballad, "Grapefruit" which remains a great vibrant standout track as ever. Another standout is "Call Me That," an R&B-infused anthem that boasts a catchy chorus and infectious rhythm, delivering a straightforward and impactful message. As a tribute to his daughter, "Kilmer Dove" is an inspirational and beautiful ode with a soothing piano soundscape to embrace us into this ravishing dream, and of course, the final track "La Santa Madre" or Holy Mother in English, an almost 10 mins track in Spanish that serves as the perfect conclusion for the album. All the songs on “Born.” are amazing, and while those are my personal highlights, the whole package is, simply put, astounding.
For the last year and a half, Nico Tortorella dedicated himself to the recording of “Born.” He found much of his inspiration during his wife's -Bethany C. Meyers- pregnancy, and as a result, he has crafted a unique heap of songs. In the beginning, the original plan was for “Born.” to be the soundtrack to Kilmer Dove's home birth. However, the project became even bigger and began to take on a life of its own. The result is a magical weaving between music and the creation of life, becoming one entity connected to the cosmos itself. During this time, Tortorella poured his heart and soul into creating some tunes that captured the essence and emotions surrounding his wife's pregnancy. They became a sort of form of meditation, a way in which he could channel his energy and connect with the transformative power of life itself. With each passing day, the music evolved into something greater than a mere soundtrack, becoming a profound expression of his innermost thoughts and feelings.
Alongside the album, Nico Tortorella also released his first children's book titled "Olivette Is You," following up on his poetry book "All of It Is You" and his memoir titled "Space Between." Tortorella's main goal with the book is to inspire young readers to seize the moment and recognize their true potential, pursuing their dreams and making them a reality. This is something that Tortorella himself took to heart with the creation of "Born."
It is quite incredible how Nico Tortorella has managed to master so many forms of artistic expression in a relatively short amount of time. From acting to writing and now music, his unwavering commitment to his craft is something that should be admired. An incredible testament to the power of artistic expression in all its forms.
