Once upon a time in far away land there was a church clerk who had an idea: buying a sawing machine and some nylon. His main goal was simple, making girls around the world happy wearing astonishing and unique pieces.

This could be the opening lines of a really long and special story about how James Lillis built one of the most iconic fashion brands for Australia, Black Milk Clothing.

In this interview Cameron Parker, Marketing director of the brand, tells us about the particular essence of Black Milk and how they manage to build a nylon empire only with the help of their clients.

A lot of people around the world are in love with Black Milk, but how did you fall in love with the brand?

I met James 3 years ago trough a mutual friend and he told me about a project he was working on making some crazy leggings. My girlfriend at the time really loved the idea of having leggings with some really cool interesting prints. My background is in marketing and advertising so we started talking about doing things of marketing and social media. I really thought that it was an awesome idea. I didn’t see anyone doing that kind of leggings. It was a simple, original and there wasn’t anything similar on the market, so it was very unique.

Do you consider yourself a marketing artist?

Yes, what we created with black milk is very special and unique. The community behind the brand is massive and they have lots of love and passion. Somebody said that the followers of Black Milk were kind of a cult and they are very passionate, so I’m really proud as a marketer. I’ve been able to use all my experience on branding, advertising, social media, I’m really proud of the community that has been created around Black Milk.

How did you come up with your amazing $0 budget marketing strategy? What’s the secret for keeping it working?  

Well, the idea of $0 budget was because we had no budget. This label was started by James out of the kitchen so we had no money, we had to sell products to make money, so we could afford basically to buy more fabric, to buy more machines, so we literally had no money for marketing so we had to use social media: Facebook, Twitter and blogging because they were all free and it was fantastic because it had a great result.
Now our marketing strategy is about discovering the brand, we don’t want to go out there and put adds on fashion magazines or digital banners in websites because it becomes more commercial. We like people discovering the brand trough fiends posting a picture on Instagram or Facebook wearing our leggings, so I’m not really interested in having more money for a marketing budget. We rather spend our money on our own website.

What has been your most challenging experience while working in Black Milk so far?

Probably growth, we went from having 10 employees to 150 and we manufacture in Australia, everything is manufacture here and Australia is not a country that really supports this industry, is really hard to get machinery, the workers, so it has been very hard to trying to build Black Milk, but we are very passionate about keeping all manufacture in Australia because we can have a higher quality and responsiveness than if we sent our products to be made in China or Asia.

I believe that the reason of Black Milk success is the awesome designs of the fabrics that you use. How do you manage to get that quality of stamps and were do you get your inspiration from?

Managing high quality is the reason why we manufacture in Australia, so James the designer, can just walk upstairs and produce, he is really hands on. You know when you manufacture in Asia you can’t do that. Taking care of costumer service helps you to keep an eye on quality as well. And not cutting any corners, we are always making sure to get the best inks, the best people, the best machines, the best of everything for producing a high quality product.

And in terms of inspiration is very random, our customers suggest ideas on Facebook and we like to hear from them. We have a new collection every month, and in our collection could be stuff really dark, you know skulls and bones and black; and then there is stuff super cute with cupcakes. We have very diverse, unique and individual products.

All Black Milk stuff is made with nylon, have you ever thought about experimenting with other materials?

Yes, actually James is working in some stuff with leather, sequins. This year we will be bringing some new basics, like tops. So yes, definitely.

Who are the “sharkies”?

The skarkies are our customers, the name sharkies came about a year ago, we were growing and our website used to crash because of the amount and volume of customers that use visit it. So we putt a note saying like “Oh My Gosh a bunch of sharks came and ate all our products”.  So yes, Sharky is a fictional name that we gave to our clients based on what happened to our website.

You don’t follow seasons, you don’t follow trends. How is the creative process behind a new collection?

Basically we listen to our costumers, they tell us what they like, so we basically hear what people are telling us. And then James really does whatever he feels, it is a quite organic, random, creative process, there is no science to it.

What makes Black Milk unique?

Our costumer and their passion, the community behind the brand, made in Australia, high quality products, the staff, the team, the costume service team, everyone that works in Black Milk, not following seasons and trends, having new products once or twice a month for people to fall in love with.

Había una vez en tierras muy lejanas un secretario de iglesia que tuvo una idea: comprar una máquina de cocer y un poco de nylon; su objetivo era simple, hacer felices a chicas alrededor del mundo con diseños únicos e impactantes.

Estas podrían ser las primeras líneas de la especial y larga historia de cómo James Lillis creó una de las marcas más conocidas de Australia por estos días.

En esta entrevista Cameron Parker, director de marketing de la marca, nos cuenta acerca de la esencia particular de Black Milk y cómo pudieron construir un imperio del nylon sólo con la ayuda de sus clientas.

Mucha gente alrededor del mundo ama Black Milk. ¿Podrías contarnos cómo fue que te enamoraste de la marca?

Conocí a James hace 3 años por un amigo en común y me contó acerca de un proyecto en el que estaba trabajando haciendo calzas divertidas. A mi novia de ese momento le encantó la idea de tener calzas con estampas super interesantes. Yo trabajo en marketing y publicidad así que empezamos a hablar acerca de hacer cosas de marketing y redes sociales en conjunto. Realmente creí desde el principio que era una idea impresionante. No había visto a nadie hacer ese tipo de calzas. Eran simples, originales y no había nada igual en el mercado, eran únicas.

Te consideras un artista del marketing?

Sí, lo que creamos con Black Milk es especial y único. La comunidad detrás de la marca es masiva y llena de amor y pasión. Alguien dijo alguna vez que las seguidoras de Black Milk son como un culto y que son muy apasionadas, así que estoy muy orgulloso como publicista. Pude usar toda mi experiencia en marcas, publicidad, redes sociales y estoy muy orgulloso de la comunidad que se ha creado alrededor de Black Milk.

Cómo surgió la idea de abordar una estrategia de marketing con $0 de presupuesto? ¿Cómo la siguen manteniendo hoy en día?

Bueno, la idea de un presupuesto de $0 surgió porque no teníamos presupuesto. Black Milk empezó espontáneamente con James, entonces teníamos que vender productos para hacer dinero. Básicamente sólo podíamos costear las telas, las maquinarias, entonces no teníamos presupuesto para marketing y empezamos a utilizar redes sociales como Facebook, Twitter y un blog que son gratis y tienen resultados muy positivos.

Ahora nuestra estrategia de marketing está basada en el descubrimiento de la marca, no queremos salir a pagar banners en revistas de moda o publicaciones online porque se vuelve todo más comercial. Nos gusta que la gente descubra Black Milk a través de fotos que sus amigos publiquen en Facebook o Instagram usando nuestras calzas. Por eso no estoy muy interesado en tener dinero para un presupuesto de marketing, preferimos gastar nuestro dinero en nuestra propia página.

¿Cuál fue la experiencia más desafiante que has vivido trabajando en Black Milk?

Probablemente lograr el crecimiento. Fuimos de tener 10 empleados a 150, y fabricamos todo en Australia. Todo es fabricado aquí y este no es un país que apoye nuestra industria, es muy difícil conseguir maquinaria, los empleados, así que ha sido difícil construir Black Milk. De todas formas queremos seguir confeccionando y fabricando todo en Australia porque eso hace posible una calidad superior a la que obtendríamos si nuestros productos se hicieran en China o Asia.

Una de las razones del éxito de Black Milk son los impresionantes diseños de las telas que utilizan. ¿Cómo logran obtener esa calidad de estampados y de dónde sacan sus ideas para inventarlos?

Manejar una calidad alta en nuestros productos se debe a que fabricamos en Australia. James, nuestro diseñador, puede directamente subir un piso en nuestras oficinas y ponerse a trabajar. Si fabricáramos en Asia no podríamos hacer eso. Dedicarle mucho al servicio de atención al cliente también ayuda a mantener la calidad de los productos. No recortar en ningún extremo de la línea productiva es otra de nuestras estrategias, siempre nos aseguramos de tener las mejores tintas, los mejores trabajadores, las mejores máquinas, lo mejor de todo para poder lograr un producto de alta calidad.

Y en términos de inspiración puede ser muy variado, nuestros clientes sugieren ideas en facebook y a nosotros nos gusta escuchar sus opiniones. Tenemos una nueva colección por mes y en ellas puede haber desde cosas muy oscuras con calaveras, huesos y mucho negro, y después cosas muy lindas con cupcakes. Tenemos productos muy diversos, únicos e individuales.

Todos los productos de Black Milk están hechos con nylon, ¿han pensado en experimentar con otros materiales?

Sí, justamente James está trabajando en unos diseños con cuero y canutillos. Este año vamos a estar lanzando algunas piezas básicas nuevas, como tops. Así que sí, definitivamente.

¿Quiénes son los “Sharkies”?

Los sharkies (tiburones) son nuestras clientas. El nombre sharkies surgió hace como un año, estábamos creciendo muy rápido y nuestra web solía colapsar por la cantidad de visitas y compras de nuestras clientas. Entonces una vez que se había caído pusimos un cartel que decía “Dios mío, un montón de tiburones vinieron y se comieron todos nuestros productos!”. Así que Sharky es un nombre ficcional que le dimos a nuestras clientas en base a lo que pasó con nuestra web.

Black Milk no se basa en estaciones ni sigue tendencias. ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo detrás de cada colección nueva?

Básicamente escuchamos lo que nos dicen nuestros clientes, ellos nos dicen lo que quieren a través de las redes sociales y lo hacemos. Después James también hace cosas que sienta, es un proceso bastante único, orgánico y creativo, pero no hay una ciencia para ello.

¿Qué es lo que hace a Black Milk una marca única?

Nuestros clientes y su pasión, la comunidad detrás de la marca, que esté todo fabricado en Australia, la calidad de nuestros productos, el equipo de trabajo, nuestro equipo de atención al cliente, no seguir ni estaciones ni tendencias, tener nuevos productos una o dos veces al mes que enamoren a nuestros clientes.
