Danielle Lande’s Ode to Lesbian Love
LA native Danielle Lande (they/she) has been dazzling audiences since 2018 with their threefold musical proposal, combining Pop structures with R&B and Jazz undercurrents. So impactful was their debut, that Danielle quickly jumped to playing hour-long sets at the legendary Hotel Cafe, eventually releasing two singles the following year that got substantial airplay on KCRW. Danielle also runs a live queer music series in Los Angeles called Queersound, which plays every third Thursday at The Love Song Bar in Downtown LA.
Just before COVID hit, Danielle’s 2019 ended up with them opening for The Marías, which saw them enter a bit of a slow period with no live performances for a while (a common story for most artists). Their 2023, however, saw the release of “Natalia’s House“, an anthem to love, intimacy, and Queer friendship.
Danielle’s newest single, Whatever You Say, follows the same celebratory trend and arrives just in time for all your queer playlist needs this month: “Releasing this song feels deeply healing for the younger version of myself who internalized false narratives about queer love being inherently wrong, predatory, or at the very least unattainable.“
“Whatever You Say” doesn’t pull any punches, describing the riot of passion, love, and lust that a budding Lesbian couple experiences as they sequester themselves from a society that would judge them harshly at best. In the song, the first thing that will truly grab you is Danielle’s amazing vocals, which have absolutely all of the tenderness that the steamy lyrics need in order to ride that balance between physical desire and genuine, soulful affection. This particular track feels like it leans away from Pop and more into a homogenous blend of R&B and Jazz that makes you wanna listen to it sitting in a comfy café while it rains outside… exactly where I was lucky enough to hear it for the first time!
