We’re living in a critical time in America’s history, relative not only to the struggle for civil rights and equality but the safeguarding of cultural identities, and Mara x Mini take their platform in this era very seriously. Their new single “We Matter” and its music video are a testament to the call for change that has been heard from coast to coast in the last couple of years, only now beginning to take root and push forward with a soundtrack worthy of the cause. Mara x Mini are doing their part to contribute a positive verse to the ongoing story of America; the question posed in “We Matter” is, ultimately, will you?

The vocal harmonies in this track are absolutely hypnotic and ironically one of the simpler elements you’re going to find in the mix. There’s no need to fluff up these singers with any external nonsense that would inevitably stifle a natural talent for hitting the high notes when it matters the most. “We Matter” is better as a raw piece of expression, and Mara x Mini knew this well ahead of their entering the studio to record it this year.
The video translates the inspirational feel of the music into an accessible visual experience I found to be reflective of this duo’s connection to one another as musicians. They’re playing off of each other’s cues rather flawlessly, and while I didn’t need to see the visuals to confirm their chemistry’s organic value, I definitely think it adds to their overall star quality as an act. Anyone can make a pomp-filled music video that vaguely references a social issue and post it onto YouTube; to give up the kind of emotionality Mara x Mini do both in their song and the imagery it’s accompanied by, a certain an artful hand is required every time.
I just found out about this pair with the recent release of this debut single, but based on what they’re doing here I think they’re on the right path towards mass exposure. They couldn’t have picked a more critical issue to cover in their rookie release, and though some would unfairly contextualize it as a political topic, Mara x Mini do a good job of framing the narrative in “We Matter” as one of transcendence that isn’t bound to the left or right in any fashion. They deserve resounding praise for their efforts, and I’m personally very eager to see what they choose to do with their sophomore release.
