If you like to take strong and intense doses of electro-demential funk you will certainly love Culture Prophet, the damaged electro-pop project from the strange mind of Michael Barksdale.
Cradled from South Carolina, Culture Prophet releases ‘Warlock’. His second EP and the first on Brahmin Records. This massive 4 track EP includes the powerful single ‘Colors Fading’, which promises to enhance the lives of music lovers around the globe.
Culture Prophet began as an outlet for Michael Barkdale’s funkier inclinations. Starting in 2005, the project quickly took off with a funky, raw, and danceable sound. The band’s live sets are raucous, sonic slabs of sound that guarantee all-night dancing, drinking, and debauchery.

In your own words, who is Culture Prophet?
Culture Prophet is an entity that only seeks a good time, sometimes at a cost, sometimes at no cost but always full of energy. There are a lot of different emotions that exist in energy, Culture Prophet is the idea of taking all of them good or bad and turning it into a good time.
Many people define your music as “damaged electro-pop from the strange mind of Michael Barksdale”, that makes me wonder… What is the creative process behind the creation of Culture Prophet’s songs?
All the songs start out with sound experimenting. Usually while improving and creating noises something will click, from there the song is pretty easy to structure. Once the initial idea is locked in the rest seems to flow pretty fast. Lyrics to songs are always last, I try to write my lyrics based around what kind of feeling the song has. Could be fun or serious depending on the mood of the song that was created out of experimentation.
You started with this music project in 2005. What milestone have you achieved that you feel most proud of?
We did a European tour a couple of years back that was totally booked on myspace. In two weeks we covered France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, and Italy. It was amazing, terrifying, thrilling, and life changing.
You have just released your second EP, Warlock. What do you want the crowd to experience when listening to the 4 tracks included in the record?
The warlock EP is kind of a roller coaster to some degree. All the songs are supposed to bring up different kinds of moods but have them rolled into one experience but for the most part I just want people to dance to it.
“Colors Fading”, Warlock’s single, is an intense, obscure and nocturnal track. What do you like most about it?
Colors Fading is an interesting one for me in that it was the first song were I sampled another song that I had written and never used. Ive done this a few times now but this song was the first one where I did that. All the songs kind of have something like this, I usually try not to do the same thing too many times on too many different songs its better for them all to have their own unique flavors.
What do you want to transmit during your live shows?
Culture Prophet live has always just been about energy. If people are not moving in some way they haven’t connected to the music live in the way that its intended. Sometimes I don’t even sing the lyrics correctly or leave out whole lines of songs. The live show is not about that, it’s just about feeling it, and being a part of the show.
What’s your greatest ambition and dream regarding Culture Prophet?
I want to take Culture Prophet as far as I can with more releases, but most importantly I want to bring that energy to as many people as possible. I want people to have the escape I have when I perform as Culture Prophet, the escape from all the worry life gives us.
