Welcome back to another round-up of Miami-based, music-centric events you shouldn’t miss out on. This weekend: the shows to see in Miami cover everything from indie rock bands at the PAMM, all-ages music fests, drag performance deathmatches and post-hardcore heroes at Churchill’s and much more. Thursday, June 20th – Currents: TOPS presented by DEFY @ The PAMM
Dreamy Montreal band TOPS will be at the PAMM tonight to headline the museum’s brand new experimental audio-visual experience Currents. Pitchfork described TOPS’s last album as filled with “plush atmosphere and vintage warmth,” – a very Miami description. The event is presented by creative agency DEFY. In addition to live music, Juggerknot Theatre Company will present an immersive flash-theater experience: ‘Miami Motel Stories’. The performance, written by Juan C. Sanchez and directed by Jennifer De Castroverde, invites viewers to reflect on Miami’s past, present, and future as the city rapidly changes. The event begins at 7 pm, with ticket prices ranging from $16 – $24. More info
Friday to Sunday, June 21st – 22nd – Miami Performance International Festival ’19 @ Edge Zone Gallery
This year’s Miami Performance International festival will be kicking off on Friday, with a packed programming schedule throughout the weekend. The two-day festival will take place at Edge Zones Gallery (who has a 23-year history of supporting artistic practices in the public domain). The event is curated by Charo Oquet (founder of Edge Zones), and Gregorio and Eduardo Alvarez (prolific Miami curators, programmers, and artists). The event will host a symposium, book launching, video screening, and performance program that casts a spotlight on transnational performativity via the histories of performance practices in South Florida. Friday’s scheduling begins at 6 pm with a film screening, and performers including Jose Hernandez Sanchez, Julio Roloff, and Jessica Fairfax among many others. Saturday’s line-up includes Three Brained Robot (New Orleans), Fsik Huvnx and Kunstwaffen. More info
Friday, June 21st – Celebrity Deathmatch: Wynwood Pride @ The Wynwood MarketPlace
Taking place at The Wynwood Market Place on Friday, Celebrity Deathmatch is back for Wynwood Pride 2019 – LGBTQIA+ Music Festival & Pride Block Party as a part of Miss Toto’s Fun House! As well as the high energy, high stakes drag performance competitions for the Championship belt, there will be a dance party featuring some of your favorite DJs from Miami, LA, and DC. The DJs include Gami Mami, Skyler Schubert, Antonio Gonzalez, Juanita LaBanjee and DeadThiago. The performers duking it out for the glory and coveted belt are FKA TWINK, Morphine Love, BJay Foxx (Antonyo Cotton), Patent Pending (Tyler Sanchez), King Femme (Eli Sage Rosenberg) to name a few. The event starts at 2 pm and will go on until 3 am. The event is 18+ and free of charge with an RSVP. More info
Friday, June 21st – Make Music Miami @ Lincon road + More locations
With its origins tracing back to a Fête de la Musique in Paris in 1982, Make Music Miami welcomes the summer solstice with free performances of all kinds throughout public spaces in Miami. With a long list of civic partners, activations will be popping up throughout the day and across the entire city. Some of the highlights of the festival include The Youth Music Summit, which will take place at the Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex. The Summit is a free, day-long gathering of young musicians aged 14-18 from throughout Miami-Dade County that begins with workshops, including artist health, musicianship and careers in music and is followed by a concert of participating student ensembles. Over on Lincoln Road, over 40 performances will take place between 5-11pm including a showcase by local label Public Works. Houndstooth Cottage will also be hosting a showcase to celebrate Make Music Miami, featuring intimate sets by underground Miami artists in a very ‘residential’ setting. Saturday, June 22nd – The Appleseed Cast / Tennis System / Woolbright @ Gramps
Kansas based quartet The Appleseed Cast will be at Gramps this Saturday, emitting their powerful 90’s emo sounds. Reminiscent of the likes of Mineral with touches of Blonde Redhead, if you like OG indie rock, you’ll like this. Also on the lineup are current tour partners Tennis System, and Florida natives Woolbright who will be opening. Doors are at 8 pm with tickets currently available for $15. More info
Sunday, June 23rd – Addicted To Vinyl (Finale) @ The Electric Pickle
The final Addicted to Vinyl will take place on Sunday at The Electric Pickle, with a long line-up of their favorite selectors who will be digging deep in their vinyl collections for their last spin. The Patio jam will start at 4 pm, which will move upstairs later in the evening for a serious late-night session (including DJs sets by Beki Powell, Brad Strickland, Elizabeth Eidelson, Franco Alexander and Ostara, plus others!). The Mini Pickle Record Fair will be running from 5pm-10pm where, as always there will be several listening stations to enhance the digging experience. Sunday, June 23rd – Fiddlehead / Fury / Abuse of Power / Diztort / Politics of Jam
90’s grunge vibes are definitely taking over Miami this weekend with Boston post-hardcore outfit Fiddlehead heading up Churchill’s on Sunday. The visiting band will be supported by Fury, Abuse of Power, Diztort and Politics of Jam. The event is 18+, with tickets currently at $15. More info
