“Everything Is OK” Marks a Confident First Chapter for The Indestructible Water Bear

The Indestructible Water Bear is an indie rock band based in Philadelphia, known for a sound that combines elements of 90s alternative rock with modern influences. The band features Gail Farmer on vocals, Jon Lipson on drums, Jimish Mehta on bass, and Geoff Rezvani on guitar. Their recent album, "Everything Is OK," explores themes of love, relationships, and the complexities of human emotions. Rather than presenting a straightforward narrative, it delves into the nuances of connection and disconnection, showcasing the talents of each member, particularly the heartfelt vocals of Gail Farmer and the rhythmic foundation laid by Jon Lipson.

The record’s opening track, “A Thousand Suns,” is absolutely magical, lifting you off the ground with its stunning guitar intro. The first thing that stands out immediately is the impressive vocal quality of Gail Farmer, who definitely has a subtle Dolores O’Riordan vibe that will undoubtedly influence how you perceive the rest of the band’s sound.

While the seven-song record maintains a coherent sound palette, the second track, “I Walk the Night,” initially throws you off with its Middle Eastern-inspired percussion on the toms. It feels wildly different—almost jarring—but this contrast makes perfect sense as soon as the rest of the band joins in. This results in the comforting realization that these musicians are already at a level where their sound is so well put together that it doesn’t require any real refinement. What I mean by this is: you know how most bands sound a bit shaky in their first album, as if they’re still getting to know each other musically? For The Indestructible Water Bear, it’s as if their debut was already their third or fourth album together.

Another standout track, "Missing You," poignantly explores longing and emotional depth, reflecting on the bittersweet nature of absence. It emphasizes how distance can highlight the strength of love and serves as a reminder of the complexities inherent in relationships. The contributions of Jimish Mehta on bass and Geoff Rezvani on guitar enhance the song's emotional weight with their subtle and subdued playing, making it a truly memorable experience.

For those interested in music that balances the emotional resonance of its lyrics and vocals with thoughtful and truly creative composition, The Indestructible Water Bear offers a compelling listening experience. Their indie rock sound harbors much more than what we typically associate with the genre, at times subtly hinting at midwestern emo textures or careful nods to progressive math-rock. In short, what a brilliant way to introduce a band. I absolutely loved this record.
