Feria Clandestina: Rebecca White's Journey

Feria Clandestina, Miami’s claims to be one of the most authentic and community-driven art fair, is making waves during its third edition. Founded by Nuria Richards in 2019, Clandestina began as a small but impactful exhibition in a Midtown apartment and has since evolved into a cultural cornerstone. Now hosted at the iconic Gold Dust Motel, this fair champions local talent and curatorial innovation, offering an antidote to the often glossy and inaccessible nature of Miami Art Week. With 29 exhibition rooms and five special projects, the 2024 is an engaging and expansive showcase of 93 artists from around the world.

Among this year’s returning artists is Rebecca White, a multidisciplinary creative whose work embodies the intuitive and the enigmatic. Having participated in the fair last year, Rebecca’s unique perspective bridges the spirit of Clandestina with the lively, exploratory energy of Miami’s art scene.
Rebecca White’s journey with Clandestina began through serendipity and inspiration. “I discovered the fair through Instagram during its first year,” she shares. The grassroots nature of the application process resonated with her, and she became part of last year’s lineup, describing the experience as “joyful—a celebration of local and emerging talent.”

For the 2024 edition, Rebecca returns with her Glyph-State series, a body of work that delves into the subtle wisdom embedded in intuition, dreams, and synchronicities. These mixed-media creations present abstract glyphs that oscillate between the familiar and the mysterious. As she explains, her process seeks to engage the viewer in uncovering layers of meaning: “Intuitive knowledge, while enigmatic, can be accessed through practice or received as an unexpected jolt.”

This year, Rebecca takes her exploration further by incorporating a participatory element—a low-tech “machine” that channels personalized messages for attendees. Inspired by humor and whimsy, she invited spiritual friends to help craft these messages. “I want people to engage with the idea that mysterious transmissions, however playful, can hold profound significance,” she says.

Her work reflects Clandestina’s ethos of community engagement and creative exchange. Beyond the art itself, Rebecca emphasizes the connections fostered through the fair. “The artists, galleries, and visitors are welcoming. It’s an environment where you can truly get to know people,” she notes, underlining the inclusive and nurturing spirit of the event.

Clandestina’s third edition, titled Making Room, promises an invigorated lineup of artists, galleries, and curatorial projects. The move to the Gold Dust Motel symbolizes its expansion and commitment to creating a platform for diverse voices. Highlights include curated rooms featuring collaborative and thematic installations, digital and video art, and Miami’s own community radio, Jolt Radio. Notable participants range from international galleries like XP · Art Agency (Cologne) to local talents such as Linda Asano and Brandon Opalka.

Feria Clandestina goes beyond being an art fair—it’s a cultural incubator. From its grassroots beginnings to its current prominence, it invites visitors to reconsider their relationship with art, community, and the spaces they inhabit. For Miami Art Week attendees, it’s a must-visit event that embodies the city’s dynamic and ever-evolving creative landscape.

As Rebecca White’s immersive and introspective project exemplifies, Feria Clandestina offers more than art—it provides a space for genuine connection, reflection, and discovery. With its community-first approach and eclectic programming, the fair continues to redefine what Miami Art Week can be. Don’t miss your chance to experience the magic at the Gold Dust Motel from December 5–7, 2024. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a curious newcomer, Clandestina is the place where art meets authenticity.
