Miami’s fashion scene is no stranger to Helder Lopez. The Angolan-born entrepreneur first launched Mawanas, a sunglasses brand that celebrates confidence, diversity, and bold self-expression. Now, he’s bringing that same fearless energy to a new venture: Mawanas Jewelry.
Inspired by his African heritage and a deep appreciation for timeless craftsmanship, Lopez’s latest project is an intimate reflection of his creative journey. Rooted in the unique artistry he grew up admiring, his jewelry line embraces authenticity over trends, much like his eyewear collection. With bracelets and earrings as the primary focus, Mawanas Jewelry aims to complement Miami’s eclectic fashion culture, offering statement pieces that stand out while honoring tradition.
In this exclusive interview with Too Much Love, Lopez shares the inspirations behind his new brand, the challenges of staying true to his vision, and what Miami’s fashion-forward community can expect from Mawanas Jewelry.
Your African roots have played a role in your creative journey. How have they influenced Mawanas Jewelry?
My African roots actually helped me a lot through this process. I grew up seeing the most unique and antique African necklaces and artwork being made, and Mawanas Jewelry pieces will be heavily inspired by those designs. I believe Africa still has so much beauty and artistry that the world has yet to fully embrace, and I’m proud to be one of the people bringing that to the forefront.
Mawanas Sunglasses was a success. What lessons from that experience are you applying to your jewelry brand?
One of the biggest lessons I learned is that, no matter how much you want to please everyone, you can’t. It’s important to stay as authentic as possible and not change your vision to fit expectations. My original Mawanas sunglasses designs are still my best sellers today, so I’m applying that same mindset to Mawanas Jewelry. Not everyone will understand or love every piece, but that’s a risk every artist and creator has to take.

What inspired you to start a jewelry line, and how does it stand out in the market?
My inspirations are not widely known or internationally recognized, but they are deeply personal to me. I have carried this vision with me for a long time, and I am determined to bring it to life. Of course, I have always admired luxury brands like Roberto Cavalli, Bulgari, and Cartier as a consumer, and that influence will be reflected in Mawanas Jewelry—but with my own unique touch.
What types of jewelry pieces will you be launching?
Mawanas Jewelry will focus exclusively on bracelets and earrings. I won’t be making chains, necklaces, or rings. I want to keep it simple and different.
How involved are you in the design and production process?
I’m very hands-on with everything I do. If my name is involved, I want to make sure it’s done the right way. It has taken months and months of sampling, exchanging ideas between parties, and countless FaceTime calls to ensure every detail is perfect.
Where are the jewelry pieces being produced?
The jewelry will be created and shipped from India. As far as I know, India is one of the best places in the world when it comes to high-quality jewelry craftsmanship.
How do you see Mawanas Jewelry being received in Miami?
I think Miami will embrace the brand really well. The city is full of designers, beautiful women, and a lot of diversity. Adding my jewelry to the mix will only enrich the culture and fashion scene even more.
Where can people purchase Mawanas Jewelry?
Mawanas Jewelry will be available very soon on Mawanas.com. I’m excited for people to bring these pieces into their homes and incorporate them into their unique, unapologetic styles.
