In the sun-soaked streets of Miami, a city known for its dynamic culture and bold fashion, Mawanas sunglasses offers more than just eyewear. Founded by Helder Lopez, this unisex brand embodies a commitment to individuality, inclusivity, and artistic expression. With a mission to create high-quality sunglasses that celebrate diversity and confidence, Helder’s journey from Luanda, Angola, to Miami is as inspiring as the designs themselves.
We sat down with Helder to talk about his vision, his process, and how Mawanas is making waves in the eyewear industry.
TML: What inspired you to create Mawanas, and how do you define the brand’s mission of inclusivity and diversity in eyewear?
Helder Lopez: Mawanas started as a spark from a friend, Elisa, who introduced me to her sunglasses. They became a part of my daily routine, and the compliments from people made me think: why not turn this positive energy into something bigger? Over time, the idea of creating my own sunglasses brand became irresistible. Mawanas is about celebrating individuality and confidence—helping people express themselves unapologetically through bold, stylish eyewear. Our mission is to make everyone feel seen and celebrated, no matter who they are.
Mawanas blends bold style with functionality. Can you walk us through your design process?
My process is simple yet deeply personal—I stay true to myself. I don’t want to replicate what’s already out there. Each design reflects art and beauty, aiming to make the wearer feel special. For me, it’s not about chasing trends or popularity but crafting something unique and meaningful. I want people who value individuality and creativity to recognize that in Mawanas.
How does Mawanas engage with the local Miami community, and what role does this play in your brand's identity?
Miami’s sun and energy are perfect for Mawanas. I’ve always felt a deep connection with the local community, and their love motivates me to keep innovating. I create affordable designs so people from all financial backgrounds can enjoy them—something very important to me as someone who grew up in Angola. My values are rooted in humility and hard work, and I want to give back by making products that are accessible, functional, and stylish for everyone.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for Mawanas in the next few years? How do you see the brand evolving?
I have big dreams for Mawanas. Beyond eyewear, I want to expand into cosmetics, jewelry, and clothing. It’s going to take time because I want to give each step the love and attention it deserves. My vision is for Mawanas to become a household name, synonymous with creativity and quality. Everything I do is driven by love and dedication, and I believe that’s what will carry the brand forward.
