While many artists release love songs for Valentine’s Day, Brooklyn native Ajii takes a different route with his latest single, “Forget About You.” This track dives deep into the emotional complexities of moving on while striving for personal success. In “Forget About You,” he collaborates with Wé Ani, a fellow American Idol contestant, and producer Alex Poeppel.
Ajii is a rapper, singer/songwriter, and former American Idol contestant. The song features an upbeat Jersey club rhythm that contrasts with its reflective lyrics on heartbreak and ambition. The lyrics reflect Ajii’s internal struggle as he sails through the tricky waters of his dreams of musical stardom, leveraging the demands and pitfalls of the industry and the lifestyle against his experiences with someone who at one point “played a pivotal role in his life.”
Regarding the track’s raison d'être, Ajii confesses, “It’s not just about missing her body; it’s about missing how she made me feel, even though I know I can’t go back. The black Air Forces line is a nod to a time when love felt unbreakable, but things changed, and now I feel disconnected from the idea of even trying again.”
“Forget About You” is a cathartic expulsion of the pain and confusion that arises from trying to move on past a broken relationship, and it does so with both swagger and evoking the emotional headspace that such a situation brings about. Allowing for a deeper connection between us, the audience, and Ajii’s particular experience.
