“City Club” is a love letter to gritty urban life. Its lyrics can be easily understood to be about an unconditional love for a person, with lines like “I love her just the way she is” and “she has a spirit of all mother nature.” But if you’ve lived in a big city before, you’re familiar with the love/hate relationships these places induce. Instrumentally, the track delivers your average cool rock jam, made even cooler with raspy vocals and references like “the nights pulsing, streets are convulsing, dark libations through the brain.”
The Growlers is composed of singer Brooks Nielsen, lead guitarist Matt Taylor and keyboard player/guitarist Kyle Straka, and their sound has been interestingly labelled “beach goth.” But the Strokes vibe in the song isn’t pure inspirational influence… the song and its album, also titled “City Club”, were co-produced by and released on Julian Casablanca’s label, Cult Records. This project is the band’s fifth studio album, and was released on September 30 of this year. Their expansive US tour next year will skip Miami, but you can catch them at Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival in early March.
