“Don’t fall into that pool, you know you’ll drown again, you drown every time. But if drowning is all you know, what do you do once you dry yourself off?”T
At first listen, Xoller’s new single ‘Warning Shot’ is a beautiful drop in the ocean of love songs about failure, mishap, deceit and confusion. But listen to this dreamy pop song again and you’ll find something much deeper beneath the surface. ‘Warning Shot’ is actually about addiction.
Laugh and say I’ll be just fine
Pick boys like you off the vine
If Lana Del Rey met Lady Gaga in a lounge and they mixed a drink together, it would be Xoller. With a distinct character to her voice, her lyrics are playful and engaging, and the hook whirls around in your mind even after its stopped playing. The ethereal nature of the chants make you feel surrounded by the song, like you’re being told a story; stacks of voices chant together in the bridge like a mantra reminding us to back off now. This is our warning shot.
“Many of us live in a series of addiction cycles, passing from one craving to the next. Every time we become fixated on something, whether it be the classics—booze, cigarettes, or love itself—we think we’re strong enough to ride the wave and come out alive on the other side. But there’s always a moment when a warning shot fires off.” The hunger, she says, keeps growing with zero satisfaction when you’re addicted to the wrong thing. “Don’t fall into that pool, you know you’ll drown again, you drown every time. But if drowning is all you know, what do you do once you dry yourself off?”
But this is a warning shot
Don’t let your heart get caught
Los Angeles based artist Xoller brings us a sound both modern and nostalgic, with an underlying current of melancholy. Cyclical heartache, as she calls it, is what inspired her newest EP, “Diamond In My Head,” coming Spring 2019. ‘Warning Shot’ is a foretelling of her new sound, through it’s soaring, melodic melodies.
