homework, the nomadic art gallery known for its conversation-triggering exhibitions, will celebrate its two-year anniversary with a pop-up exhibition in Little River and an immersive booth at NADA Miami during Miami Art Week. Both initiatives will have an overarching concept: to explore and celebrate Caribbean cultural identity. Julián Chams and Patricia Encarnación will be the artists highlighted at their booth at NADA, while a wide range of artists hailing directly from the Caribbean or with deep ancestral ties to the region will be featured at the exhibition in Little River titled "Hormiga Caribe" (Tropical Red Fire Ant).

Hormiga Caribe is inspired by these powerhouse creatures, which are symbols of resilience in the face of adversity and known for overcoming insurmountable obstacles by working together as a community. They hold a sense of community so strong that an affront to one 'hormiga caribe' can invoke a formidable response from the entire hill. Throughout history, they have held important cultural significance. In some Native American cultures, they are seen as symbols of diligence, patience, and hard work. homework aims to draw direct ties between the resilience of the Hormiga Caribe and the artists of the region.

“The exhibition will celebrate the fiery determination of Caribbean creatives who, like the Hormiga Caribe, adapt and thrive, no matter the adversity they face. Their art, diverse and dynamic, transcends boundaries and dares to challenge conventional curatorial explorations. Just as las Hormiga Caribe creates intricate networks of tunnels and chambers, artists in the Caribbean have forged connections and collaborations that challenge conventional wisdom, breaking down barriers in the art world and beyond," shares Aurelio Aguiló, co-founder of homework.

homework’s booth at NADA Miami will feature new pieces created exclusively for the fair by Chams and Encarnación. Chams repurposes Caribbean visual imagery, breathing new life into an often overseen culture, while Encarnación reimagines colonial artifacts to provoke thoughtful discourse. The booth will offer a visually engaging and intellectually stimulating experience, inviting visitors to explore cultural identity, time, and nature. Chams and Encarnación's works act as time capsules, capturing Caribbean essence through imagery, objects, and symbols. Their interventions encourage reflection on cultural identity's evolving nature.

This new offering from homework is poised to redefine our understanding of Caribbean cultural identity through the lens of contemporary art. As usual, homework will engage the local community with robust, dynamic programming of activations at their Little River location, featuring panel discussions, performances, screenings, and more.

homework aims to inspire attendees and collectors to embark on a reflective journey guided by the voices of the Caribbean, encouraging them to consider how these works shape their perceptions of the region.
