Today we are debuting a brand new section here at TML. After hanging out around the streets of Miami for over 10 years now, we do have a pretty good idea of the things and places we like to do and visit, and the ones we don’t. But we know we can’t know it all… for that reason we decided to pick the brains of some OG locals whose opinions we value. For this first Miami Talks, we caught up with the legendary Miami-based producer Arthur Baker, whose prolific career highlights collaborations with New Order, Afrika Bambaataa and Planet Patrol, among many others. This Sunday you will be able to catch him playing records at Tigre, for our monthly Brunch & Vinyl series co-hosted by Technique. But before we get to the main course, open your notes app and write down some of his local recommendations. Specialty coffee or colada to start the day? I love my local Cuban restaurant l tinta y cafe in Miami Shores for a colada, a black iced americano and a watermellon juice… 2 minute walk for me, and do most of my lunch meets there too. Favorite Miami spots to take family when visiting: Well the beach is number one, either Key Biscayne or the beach near Bal Harbour, where my wife and I do romantic beach dinners. Haulover park is great for dogs, bikes and beach... Legion Park farmers market on Biscayne is a great place for vegtable shopping and amazing humous and dog runs too. Technique Records for friends who like record-picking. What are the things you miss the most about Miami when on tour/ traveling? I miss my wife, my daughter and dog when I'm away… and my pool where I swim 30 minutes every day to stay in shape. Favorite event season in Miami: I guess it would have to be now, Basel. Winter Music is a bit much these days and Basel has enough music events to take care of that. Miami tastes like … The peppered swordfish at Tigre!! Also mango smoothies my wife makes at home and Cuban sandwhich at Tinta y Cafe. Culinary hidden gem: Jrk! Great Jamaican food, drinks and vibes by Max Piere What record do you think is the perfect soundtrack for Miami? I'd have to pick my own track "Mi Mente" by the Criminal Element Orchestra, released on Oscar G's Made In Miami/ Nervous label. It's a salsa house track that never fails to rock the house. Also, my 2 old school electro tracks, "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa and Soul Sonic Force, and "Play at Your Own Risk" by Planet Patrol are definitely Miami classics.
