M. Dunton’s New Single ‘Hotel Lobby’ Is a Melodic Journey Through Temptation and Desire

“Sitting with my head inside my hands Hiding in the hotel lobby Wish I wasn't taken by your friend Dancing to a Lonely Heartbeat”

M. Dunton's musical prowess shines brilliantly in his new single "Hotel Lobby," -the opening track from his self-titled debut album- which begins with the lines above, accompanied by an exquisite and delicate musicalization that immediately hooks the listener. The story behind the song delves into the tale of an unnamed individual enticed by the partner of his friend, exploring the intricate interplay between primal desire and human determination. Through this narrative, Dunton skillfully dissects the internal struggle between carnal desires and the steadfast determination to uphold ethical principles, while consumed by passionate longing and a sense of self-pity.

The choruses serve as a moment of awakening, as the protagonist comes to terms with the necessity of walking away when faced with overwhelming temptation. Sadness, resignation, melancholy, and an internal moral debate are some of the feelings that Dunton makes us feel with his voice which blends perfectly with the atmosphere of the song and moves between the borders of scratchiness and hoarseness.

The musical arrangement mirrors the emotional journey of the song. All the elements are put in their place and in the right measure. The voice leads and the music accompanies and complements, without ever getting in the way. However, it waits for its moment and once it arrives, music takes the necessary role. Nothing is missing and nothing is left over.

A curious fact is the innovative approach to recording during the production. The creation of the riff, described by Dunton as "toddler proof," showcases the artist's knack for simplicity that retains its complexity.

"I wrote that riff and told Aaron (Aaron Shafer-Haiss, producer) that it was toddler proof," Dunton recalled, "meaning a toddler could hunt and peck those notes out of time on a piano and it would still sound interesting."

This concept prompted producer Aaron Shafer-Haiss to introduce his toddler's toy piano into the studio, utilizing it to record this particular segment. The collaborative spirit led to an enjoyable exploration of unconventional methods, as both artists challenged conventions and sought innovative techniques for capturing each element of the composition.

The Nashville-based artist M. Dunton combines melodic storytelling with a century of folk, rock’n roll, alternative, and blog-era indie into a fresh alchemized form of Americana music. His self-titled debut album was produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss and consists of 8 solely penned tracks that clock in at just over 30 minutes. Time enough to enjoy the journey.
