Wigs, Cocktails, and Celebrations: Saints n' Scissors Turns 10!

We have been following Saints n' Scissors for a while now. Many of you might be familiar with them not only because of some of our previous features or their pretty signature work as some of Miami's top colorists but also because of the instantly recognizable black façade of their salon, located on Biscayne Boulevard and 110th Street.

The salon, founded by stylists Amy Miller, Shelley Miller, and Ricky Diaz, is turning a decade old, and they will be celebrating in style with a wig party, a DJ set by Rippin Kittin, cocktails, and bites. The event will be on Sunday, August 18th, from 2-6 pm.

We had a chance to talk to co-founder and colorist-in-chief Amy Miller about the celebration, her craft, and the main takeaways of the last 10 years. Read below!

Amy, congratulations on Saints n' Scissors celebrating its 10-year anniversary! Can you tell us what inspired you and your co-founders to start this salon back in 2014?

Thank you! We’ve all worked at different salons through the years, but they all had the same modern, typical salon aesthetic. I always dreamt of becoming a salon owner and creating a completely different type of salon vibe. After surviving a terrible accident in 2011, I decided to not wait any longer and make it happen. Thankfully, I had my mom, Shelley, and dear friend Ricky by my side to bring Saints n' Scissors to life.

Saints n' Scissors has become a beloved full-service salon in Miami. What do you think sets your salon apart from others in the area?

Growing up as a hair stylist’s daughter, I always felt most at home in the salon atmosphere. We really wanted to create an environment where you walk in and instantly get the feeling of home and comfort. A place where you feel accepted and excited to feel your most beautiful, creative self. A place to express who you feel you are inside.

Tell me more about the unique aesthetic of the salon and the branding behind it.

I’ve always had a love for alternative fashion and unique characters. When my mom and I found our building, it spoke just that! Built in the 1920s, its vintage and historic feel was a perfect fit for our style. It helped to complete our vision for the brand.

The anniversary event sounds exciting with cocktails, music, bites, and a wig party! Can you share more about what guests can expect at this celebration and why you chose a wig party as part of the festivities?

Our guests can expect a warm embrace of gratitude, lots of laughter, and happiness. We’re excited to express how thankful we are to everyone for supporting us for 10 years. Our salon has always been about feeling comfortable in making changes and transformations. A wig party is a perfect way to show how changing up your hair can be daring and fun!

As a color specialist, you've undoubtedly seen many hair trends come and go. What current trends in hair color and styling are you most excited about, and how do you incorporate them into your work at the salon?

I’m loving all the shag looks and the use of soft, natural-looking color. But, of course, I will always be partial to vivid reds! What I feel is most important to incorporate in my work is listening and helping direct each client to the color and cut that is best for them individually.

How has Miami influenced your work, and what do you love most about serving the Miami community?

As a second-generation Miami native, I’ve always loved the vibrancy of our city. The art and music scene constantly keeps me updated with the latest fashion and beauty trends. What I love most about serving the Miami community is being able to meet and connect with so many different people. Every day brings new faces and stories. I’m so thankful to these people who have returned throughout the last 10 years. Many of them have become like family.

What's the next challenge for the Saints n' Scissors team?

Celebrating this milestone, we will continue to expand our knowledge on the array of services we currently offer, such as tattoos, skincare, hair, and nails. Keeping on top of all the latest trends.
