With a perky rhythm serving as its centerpiece, it’s a safe assumption to make that fans of a traditional pop swing are going to like what they hear in the new single “A Little Bit of Love” from Kate Tucker; however, what makes this track such a charming release has little to do with its familiar attributes. Beneath the surface appeal of its simplistic cosmetics lies an artsy concept of what a harmony should sound and feel like in a modern pop song, and for those of us who live for something a little more provocative in the genre, it’s a tenacious listen this fall for sure.

Tucker’s voice is such a delicate but sterling force to be reckoned with in this mix, and I like that it’s been given a little extra room to really fill up the backend of the track with a color that doesn’t sound artificially-born at all whatsoever. There haven’t been many tracks of this kind to have landed on my desk without bearing some resemblance to the ultra-minimalistic pop of an early 2000s generation of indie players, but in this case we find a singer/songwriter who isn’t interested in perfecting the past, but instead making a future that is hers and hers alone.
“A Little Bit of Love” hits harder than it would initially seem capable of mustering, and at the end of its nearly three minutes of play I have to admit that it’s difficult to describe Kate Tucker’s sound as anything but incredibly precise. I love the dedication to efficiency she’s exhibiting in this performance, and if given the right tools to continue her creative ascent I think we’re going to start hearing more praise for her music on the mainstream end of the critical spectrum a lot sooner than later. This is a mature look and, for my money, one of the slicker songs to her credit so far.
